Mastery of the Oboe Takes a Lifetime

Mastery of the oboe requires controlling many variables both technical and musical.  Vibrato is a tool that all oboists will have in their toolbox.  Learn to be a multi-tool player; develop your technique and try double tonguing, circular breathing, flutter tonguing, multi-phonics.  Don't forget that long tones are an advanced technique too!

Flutter Tonguing

Jacqueline Leclair - Flutter Tonguing
All this we hear about flutter-tonguing requiring a "knack", or being a genetically endowed skill seems inaccurate to me. The tongue is by far the most agile, sophisticated and impressive muscle (4 groups of muscles) in the human body.

Double Tonguing

Double Tonguing seems to be more difficult for oboists but sure comes in handy. For some thoughts on double tonguing click here.
