OC192 Internet Service Providers

This article will attempt to define some of the terminology associated with digital Internet and telephone connections.
Researching digital connection devices online can be incredibly daunting. Perhaps a computer engineer or other "computer tech" can easily disseminate what appears to be mumbo jumbo to a technical layperson. Acronyms like T1, T3, SIP, OC3, and OC192, appear mysterious and even intimidating to non-computer geeks.

To begin, the following is a list of commonly used terms on digital connection provider websites.

T1- phone lines that allow for 60 times the amount of data to be communicated via 24 channels (1.544 mbps bandwidth)

T3 -service that offers speeds 50 times faster than a 56k modem (45 mbps)

SIP -Session Initiation Protocol- a communication application that allows creation, modification, and termination of Internet sessions

OC3 - Optical Carrier 3- a 155 mbps fiber optic line.

OC12 - Optical Carrier 12- a 622 megabits per second fiber optic line

OC48 - Optical Carrier 48- a 2.5 gigabits per second line

OC192 - Optical Carrier 192- a 9.6 gigabits per second line

ISP - Internet Service Provider

LAN - Local Area Network

Bandwidth - the total amount of data that can flow through a connection within a specified amount of time.

OC192 Connections

OC192 is the fastest optical carrier connection that also has the ability to transfer the highest volume of data. Users can exchange files from points all over the world.

Large corporations must pay steep fees for these connections (perhaps as high as $500,000 a month) and they must have an experienced Internet Service Provider that can service their needs. Large corporations have phased out the usage of T1 and T3 carriers because they do not have the available bandwidth capable of transmitting data at high speed.

Optical carrier connections can exchange large text files, graphics, audio, video, sound, webpage, and databases to global users in record time.

Potential buyers or leasers of optical carrier 192 connections may need to call in the Geek Squad to help them initiate service. Researching this carrier is difficult and Internet searches provide less than satisfying results.

A good site that provide background and history on OC192 and other connections www.networkdictionary.com. The website www.geek.com can provide basic definitions for connective devices.

There is a wealth of information online regarding lesser T-carrier connections (T1 and T3). These are still adequate connection devices for small to medium-sized businesses. A Site to find information on T-carriers is www.techtarget.com
