OCD Skin Picking And It's Causes
There can be many causes that can cause skin picking
1) Many OCD Skin Picking causes can be emotional, mental or both. Emotional trauma can lead to feelings of helplessness and insecurity. When a child has been traumatized and bullied by a parent, sibling, schoolmate, he or she loses the feeling of being in control of the world around them. In fact, the bullying makes the persons personal space closed in. It's possible this person now thinks he or she has control of a certain area of the world as close as his or her own skin. By choosing which areas, flaws, and blemishes to pick or leave to alone, he or she now has some sort of control over their life, no matter how small it is.2) Not all skin picking causes are the result of chronic distress. Sometimes one single but deeply troubling experience in a persons life can also lower their self-esteem. They now withdraw from social relationships and turn the lingering effects of the trauma inside themselves, where the feelings of guilt and anger increase their OCD skin picking need.
3) Some skin picking causes are actually symptoms of another disease or disorder. Many OCD skin picking patients also suffer from other mental issues such as depression, schizophrenia, or body dysmorphic disorder. Some physical conditions include excessive skin picking in their symptomology. Many times these physical disorders can affect the liver and or kidneys, but skin picking can also be a sign of anemia.
4) Some drugs, both prescription and otherwise can be bad for you and will have a reverse effect that will not help you Stop Compulsive Skin Picking. This is really an OCD skin picking cause that is worth stating. Some drugs have side affects that cause itchiness and other sensations to the skin that lead to picking and scratching. Changing the drug dosage can increase the urge to pick. Other times, the irresistible urge to pick comes during a withdrawal phase, when a drug therapy has ended.
5) Genetics are often stated as a skin picking cause. Once a compulsion is revealed to family members, it's not uncommon for other family members to confess that they also suffer from this condition.

OCD Skin Picking And It's Symptoms
Here are some of the syptoms related to OCD
The main feature of OCD Skin Picking is the repetitive picking at one's own skin to the point where it can cause physical damage. Usually, but not always, the face is one of the main locations for skin picking. However CSP, also known as dermatillomania, neurotic excoriation, or chronic skin picking, may involve any part of the body. A person with CSP may pick at normal skin imperfections such as freckles, moles, scabs, sores or acne blemishes, or at imagined skin defects that nobody else can see. These people tend to pick at areas that can be hidden by their cloths. People with OCD skin picking may use their fingernails, as well as their teeth, tweezers, pins or other items found around their home. As a result, this disorder may cause bleeding, bruises, infections, and/or permanent damage to the skin.Sometimes skin-picking is preceded by a high level of tension and a strong "itch" or "urge". Also, skin picking may be followed by a feeling of relief or pleasure. A CSP or OCD Skin picking episode may be a conscious response to anxiety or depression, but is most likely done as an unconscious habit. Individuals with an OCD picking disorder often try to hide the damaged area by using make-up to cover the marks and scars they have caused. In extreme cases, individuals with CSP may avoid social situations in an effort to prevent others from seeing the scars, scabs, and bruises that result from OCD skin picking.

A Great Song That Made Me Smile
I saw this song on YouTube and thought there were some parallels for people in relationships where one person is suffering from this problem. I know the true meaning of the song has nothing to do with the condition of skin picking, but I think you will see what I mean when you watch the video. Plus the song is really catchy, and don't blame me if it gets stuck in your head. Post a comment in my guestbook and tell me if I'm right or wrong. I guess I just really like the song.

Techniques That Help Stop OCD Skin Picking
Try applying all or some of these techniques, they can really help!
If you are a compulsive face picker, these will work best for you. Many of these techniques are geared towards face pickers, but they can be applied to other forms of this disorder or other areas of your body that you might pick.
None of these techniques will be the magic bullet for you, but applying all of them over time (focusing diligently on maybe 4-5 of them per week) will get your OCD picking under control.
None of these techniques will be the magic bullet for you, but applying all of them over time (focusing diligently on maybe 4-5 of them per week) will get your OCD picking under control.
- Avoid both looking in mirror and touching your skin when not absolutely necessary.
- Wash your face in kitchen sink to avoid mirrors as much as possible.
- Stick to planned activities even if your skin looks bad. Do not make this a reason to cancel any activities.
- Record all of your picking episodes, resisted urges, and preliminary behaviors such as face scanning and touching. For each episode or resisted urge, record the following details immediately after: time of day, length of episode, number of spots, intensity of the urge, situation/activity, emotions thoughts & sensory experiences, and note how you stopped picking. This technique alone will help you greatly.
- Make flashcards with inspirational messages and reasons not to pick. Make a list of alternative activities you can do instead of OCD picking. Before giving in to the urge, read through flashcards and choose an alternative activity to do first. If you must, pick only afterwards.
- Buy lots of hand toys, for work and home. Focus on using these instead of touching your face.
- If you absolutely must pick, set timer for 5 minutes first! Helps prevent the "trance" and picking marathons
- Focus on taking good physical care of yourself.
OCD Skin Picking - There Is Help!
Help for OCD skin picking
The primary treatment for OCD skin picking depends on the level of awareness the individual has regarding the problem. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Habit Reversal Training (HRT) may be used, as it appears that skin-picking is a conditioned response to specific situations and events, and that the individual with compulsive skin picking is frequently unaware of these triggers. There is a website I came across that seems to get fantastic results in treating this disorder.Visit CureSkinPicking.info for more information about this program.
