Planning your visit to Ocean City, Maryland

Located near the mid-point of the United States' Atlantic Coast, Ocean City draws from millions of beach-lovers from throughout the mid-Atlantic region.  Like several others on the coast, this popular resort is actually located on a barrier island, with a series of bays separating the island from mainland Maryland.  The major metropolitan areas around Washington, DC and Baltimore are the source of many of Ocean City's vacationers (only 3-4 hours away by car), while many more come from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Virginia and beyond.

There's 3 miles of boardwalk at the southern end of Ocean City - and another 7 miles of hotels, condos and beachfront homes stretching to the north until you reach the Delaware border.  Coastal Highway (aka Philadelphia Avenue at the southern end) stretches the full length of Ocean City, a block or two off the oceanfront.

To make your search a little easier, we've divided the town into three pieces: the Boardwalk (at the southern end of town), Midtown, and North Ocean City.

Boardwalk Hotels

If you want to be in the "middle of the action" and you don't mind the associated noise and crowds, then staying at one of the hotels on or near the Ocean City Boardwalk is an option for your next OC vacation.

You'll pay more to stay at an oceanfront hotel - and still more for an oceanfront room at an oceanfront hotel - but you can save by choosing to stay in the two blocks just off the beach. (Anything beyond that means you'll have to cross Ocean Highway. It's not an excessively long walk, but it is a very busy road.)

Hotels in "Midtown" Ocean City

starting just north of the Boardwalk, up to Route 90

The "midtown" section of Ocean City is the area from the north end of the boardwalk on up to Route 90 (the northern entryway onto the island from the Maryland mainland). The hotels of midtown Ocean City start to get a bit taller and larger than those found on the boardwalk, and the area is just a little bit quieter. But don't get us wrong: there's still plenty of life (and lots of nightlife) in this part of town.

North Ocean City Hotels

where Ocean City grew up, literally

Head north of where Route 90 comes onto Ocean City's barrier island and you enter what we call "North Ocean City". This is the area that became the home of the famous (infamous?) high-rise condos and hotels, starting in the 1970's and continuing through today. Everything's a bit more spread out when you get this far north, primarily due to the big parking lots around northern Ocean City's big hotels. But the beach is still there and there's still lots of life all long Ocean Highway.
