Ocean Shores - Washington Coast Playground

The nearest ocean beaches to Seattle are located at Ocean Shores and Westport. Ocean Shores has become Western Washington's busiest weekend getaway and ocean playground on the coast.

Ocean Shores Location

Many activities are available: enjoyment of the beaches and two major state parks, horseback riding on the beach, driving on the beach, boating on Duck Lake, golf, kite flying, sand castle building, beachcombing, summer festivals sponsored by the city, an indoor waterpark, go karts, mini golf, bumper boats, video game arcade, and movie theater. Numerous accomodations are available in the form of major hotels, motels, B&Bs, and vacation rental houses and condos.

Ocean Shores Activities

The eight mile long Ocean Shores peninsula separates Grays Harbor from the Pacific Ocean. The North Jetty at the southern tip of the peninsula (marking the north entrance to the harbor) holds in the sand and stablizes the peninsula. Wide, sandy ocean beaches stretch from the jetty thirty miles north to Point Grenville on the Quinault Indian Nation reservation.

The interior of the peninsula has been dug with a network of canals and lakes. The principal canal is the Grand Canal and the largest lake is Duck Lake. These waterways have attracted vegetation and wildlife: many kinds of birds, including Great Blue Heron, and deer. The mother deer will swim to the deserted islands in the middle of Duck Lake to give birth to their foals in safety. On the beaches you will find several species of shorebirds, sometimes seals, and occasionally from the North Jetty in the spring you can spot a Pacific Grey whale. Whalewatching tour boats are available in the spring for more reliable sightings of whales.

There are fewer rules restricting recreation on the Ocean Shores beaches than up north in the Olympic National Park. Driving is permitted on the beach in designated areas. Dogs are permitted. Bonfires are permitted away from the beach grass and dunes.

ATTRACTION: North Jetty

Built between 1908-1916 to secure the northern boundary of the Grays Harbor entrance and hold in the sand of the Ocean Shores peninsula. It lies at the southern tip of Ocean Shores. Here you can climb on the rocks and watch the big waves roll in off the ocean. Behind the jetty is a shallow, safe beach for kids to play. A few modest sand dunes give a little elevation for a nice view of the surroundings.

Jetties and Shoreline Change

ATTRACTION: Damon Point State Park

The park sits on a large sand spit from which you can get views of the Olympics, Grays Harbor, and across the harbor to Westport. Online maps show a road running through the park, but this was washed away in a recent storm. Now, you park alongside the main road and walk into the park. On the day we visited, we saw the cutest baby seal hanging out on the rocks, waiting for its mother.

ATTRACTION: Duck Lake and Grand Canal

The Ocean Shores peninsula has an extensive network of lakes and canals. Although artificial, these waterways have attracted vegetation and wildlife and become very pretty. Blue heron are very common, nesting along the shore. Deer swim to the deserted islands in the middle of Duck Lake to give birth to their foals in safety.

Ocean Shores Parks

ATTRACTION: Ocean Shores Electric Boat Company

The Ocean Shores Electric Boat Company rents modern, comfortable, electric-powered boats for cruising and the Grand Canal and Duck Lake running the length of the Ocean Shores peninsula. The boats seat up to 10 and include a CD player, radio, and picnic table. Comfortable in any weather with a canopy against the sun and clear plastic panels that can be closed to keep out the wind. My kids had a blast!

ATTRACTION: Ocean City State Park

Near the entrance to Ocean Shores, if you are coming to the ocean for a day trip, this is the nearest point to reach the ocean beaches. You can walk the beaches here for miles in either direction. The sand stretches unbroken from the Ocean Shores North Jetty in the south 30 miles to Point Grenville on the Quinault Indian reservation in the north.

ATTRACTION: Horseback Riding on the Beach

Three stables offer horseback riding tours or rentals on the beach:

Honey Pearl Ranch
Nan-Sea Stables
Chenois Creek Horse Rentals

ATTRACTION: Quinault Beach Resort and Casino

For the visitor not staying at this hotel, you can enjoy the busy Indian casino with occasional live music, the restaurant, the sushi bar, or saunter out to the beach on the short boardwalk trail.

Quinault Beach Resort

ATTRACTION: Captain Yarrs' Indoor Water Park

A large indoor water play structure with water cannon, buckets, slides, and more. Public opening times are limited, so check the website in advance.

ATTRACTION: Pacific Grey Whalewatching

In the spring, Pacific Grey whales will be migrating north between the Sea of Cortez and the Arctic. In May, it is the mothers and babies passing by. Whale tour boats out of Westport will also pick up passengers from Ocean Shores. Just offshore is a "whale hole", where the whales tend to linger, so they can be found pretty reliably. It is possible to spot whales also from the rocks of the North Jetty or from the ferry that runs to Westport.

ATTRACTION: Ferry to Westport

You can ride a passenger ferry in the summer between Ocean Shores and Westport. On the other side by foot you could tour the marina and shops, climb the viewing tower, and reach a nearby beach. With bikes you could visit some state parks on the ocean and the Grays Harbor Lighthouse - tallest in the state.
