Learn About Ocelots - Tigrillo - Margay

Ranked #156 in Pets & Animals, #4,638 overall | Donates to Big Cat Rescue

Ocelot comes from the Aztec word tlalocelot which means "field tiger."

Measuring up to four feet long, ocelots are about twice the size and weight of ordinary house cats. Being nocturnal, ocelots hunt at night with varying techniques. Because they swim well, they will often hunt for fish.

As occasional climbers, they will catch birds. Ocelots have been hunted since the ancient Aztec civilization. The highly prized, distinctive coat of the ocelot is an incentive to poachers.

Today, ocelots live only in small pockets along the border.

Ocelots are believed to have lived as far north as Arkansas and as far west as California before the United States annexed areas of the Southwest.
Today, ocelots live only in small pockets along the border. While they can still be found in much of their Latin American territory, their numbers are a fraction of what they once where.

OCELOT Species Spotlight

How to catch an ocelot?
Scientists at a wildlife refuge in southern Texas were having a hard time finding the few ocelots that lived in the area. They tried using all kinds of animal smells but the ocelots would never show up. So it was very lucky for the scientists when an amazing accidental discovery took place. A worker at the refuge wore the scent of Obsession, a men's cologne (think of it as a perfume for men). One day an excited ocelot tried to rub against the worker to better catch the scent. The scientists then knew that ocelots love Obsession! They are now trying to use the cologne to help in their project to raise the number of ocelots.

  • Ocelot comes from the Aztec word tlalocelot which means "field tiger."

  • Ocelots have only 36 pairs of chromosomes while most other cats have 38. Their close relatives the margay and oncilla are the others to share this distinction.

  • Ocelots often sit perfectly still for a half hour or more waiting for unsuspecting prey.

  • Some observers believe that ocelots remain faithful to their chosen mates.

Ocelots generally are about 18 inches tall at the shoulder, and about 4 foot in length, including their 13 to 15 inch tail. Ocelots also vary their hunting behavior to take advantage of seasonal changes in prey abundance, such as spawning fish and land crabs in the wet season.

Ocelots mostly come out at night

Source: 4.bp.blogspot.com via Jeffry on Pinterest

Ocelots are excellent climbers, but they do most of their hunting on the ground. Ocelots mostly come out at night. During the day they sleep in trees, bushes and thick grasses. Some ocelots live alone, while others have been reported to live in pairs, maintaining contact by mewing to each other. Many ocelots in captivity become highly social with certain people.

Did you know that European royalty once used cheetahs to hunt deer, or that caracals can capture birds by leaping six and a half feet straight up into the air from a standing start? Have you ever wondered whether domestic cats really do land on their feet when they fall, or how Canada lynx can stalk their prey in the winter without falling through the deep snow?

Oncilla/Tigrillo

Young oncillas have been observed to purr,

The Oncilla, also known as the Little Spotted Cat, Tigrillo, Cunaguaro or Tiger Cat, is a small spotted felid found in the tropical rainforests of Central and South America. It is a close relative of the Ocelot and the Margay, and has a rich ochre coat, spotted with black rosettes.

Leopardo tigre, gato manchado, tigrillo, cunaguaro, gato tigre menor. En portugués gato-do-mato. En inglés se le conoce por tiger ocelot, little tiger cat, oncilla.

The Margay is a spotted cat native to Middle and South America

Margays have recently been discovered to hunt by mimicking the vocalisation of a prey species

Most notably the margay is a much more skillful climber than its relative, and it is sometimes called the tree ocelot because of this ability. Whereas the ocelot mostly pursues prey on the ground, the margay may spend its entire life in the trees, leaping after and chasing birds and monkeys through the treetops.
