An Octonauts Birthday
My 6 year old is a fan of Octonauts - a Children's TV programme featuring Animals who live under the sea.
The Octonauts are a team of undersea explorers in search of adventure and fun! From their base "the Octopod", the crew are always ready to embark on new exciting voyages! To find out more visit www.octonauts.com
Each year he challenges me to make him a cake for his birthday, and this year it was to be an Octonauts cake. I was a bit wary of this as the characters are not that simple!
The captain is Barnacles Bear. Peso is a penguin. Kwazii is an orange kitten. These are the main characters that my son wanted on his cake.

The Cake

So this is the cake. A basic sponge cake for the base, covered in butter icing and using coloured fondant icing for the Octonauts.

Baking the Cake.
The recipe I use is very simple sponge recipe.
Ingredients
6oz Butter/Margarine
6oz Sugar
3 Eggs
6oz Self Raising Flour
Method
Whisk together the BUTTER and SUGAR until creamy and light
Mix in the 3 eggs (with a little flour each time to prevent curdling - I don't worry about this!)
Mix in the S.R. Flour.
Put into a greased lined square cake tin
Cook for approx 40mins on 180 degrees C / Gas mark 4 / 350 degrees F
Test whether cooked by putting a knife into the middle and if it comes out clean then it is cooked.
Leave to cool.

Icing the cake
I made a simple butter cream with a spot of blue food coloring to make it a 'sea' color.
Butter Cream Ingredients
4 oz butter
8oz Icing sugar
Food coloring - just a few drops
Mix/whisk these together until a creamy mix.
I use an electric hand-whisk to make the job very easy!
Once the cake is definitely cool, then use a palette knife to smooth the butter icing over the cake - including the sides.

Fondant Icing
For the Characters on the cake, I used ready colored fondant icing.
The pack I bought (in the UK) had red, green, yellow, blue and black. I also had some white fondant icing too.
To use fondant icing, it is important that the surface you are rolling out on is dry, and use some icing sugar (confectioners sugar?) to roll out onto to prevent it sticking.

Making Peso the Penguin
To make Peso, I rolled out a small amount of black icing and cut out an oval for his face.I then rolled out some white icing and used a knife to cut out the white heart shape to go on top. This was quite tricky to get the right shape.
I then rolled some VERY VERY tiny pieces of black icing into balls to make the 2 eyes.
The Beak was easy - another small ball - yellow this time - and squished it into a beak shape.
The hat I made out of blue - but to get the right shade of blue, I rolled together some white and some blue icing until it because a uniform shade of light blue.
TIP - I found that by alternately rolling into a sausage shape, then a ball shape, then a sausage shape etc, that the icing mixed easily into the new shape of colour.
I then rolled out the light blue, and cut out the hat shape.
Making Kwazii the Cat
I needed to make orange icing for Kwazii, so I rolled together some red and yellow (using the sausage then ball method as described above) until I achieve a nice even shade. Then it was a simple matter of cutting a circle for the head, then adding some ears - getting them perfectly shaped was tricky.
For the eye patch and eye. I used some black fondant icing. His eye needs a TINY TINY ball of white for the pupil.
The nose - I used a tiny piece of shaped yellow for the 'moustache' and a red dot for his nose and a black dot for his tongue.
Kwazii's ears need a tiny triangle of yellow in them.
Use a toothpick (or similar) to make the little 'freckles' on Kwazii's face.
Kwazii's hat is a darker shade of blue so I didn't need to mix this one. I cut it out and placed it on his head. I found that I needed to make a tiny ball of icing (as thick as the depth of the orange face) to stop the hat from flopping onto the cake.
Making Captain Barnacles
Barnacles was made with predominantly white icing - I cut out a bear shaped head.I added 2 tiny black dots for eyes, with even tinier white dots for the pupils.
I used some of the very pale blue (from Peso's hat) to make Barnacle's moustache - and inside of his ears.
His tiny nose was made from a mix of white (and a TINY bit of black) to create a pale grey.
His mouth is a dot of black.
Captain Barnacles needs a mid blue hat similar to Kwazii, which was just cut from blue fondant icing.
