Flightless Birds are ODD

Sharing insights and info on ODD BIRDS. Birds that do not fly. Birds that dive or swim. Peculiar beaks. Odd life habits are all fair game here.
Some of the risks faced by FLIGHTLESS BIRDS. . .
Grass Strangles Penguins- view video

And the most recent tragic event on a global scale is the Hundreds of Penguins that have washed up on the shores of Rio. DEAD.

Petrels are ODD too

So What is a petrel? And Why is it ODD?

Petrels are ODD BIRDS. Pelagic... almost. Nest in rock cliffs. Funny bills ... tube shaped. But they are useful. Those odd holes are not nostrils but they process sea water and make it usable for the chunky little bird. Cool. Straight from Wildlife of Antarctica about some petrels(there's more than one kind!)
"Diving petrels are small seabirds with stubby wings that seem to whir like wind-up toys as they buzz about the sky in perpetual motion."

BALD birds are ODD

LIke Vultures and Condors

BALD ODD BIRDSCondors become sexually mature at about five or six years of age and mate for life. Imagine if PEOPLE did THAT!!
Most nest sites have been found in caves and rock crevices. Condors do not build nests.
Neither do most people!
Instead, an egg about 5 inches long, weighing about 10 ounces sits on bare ground.

Condors lay a single egg normally every other year. The egg hatches after 56 days of incubation and
both parents share responsibilities for feeding the
nestling. THAT ought to be a people parent prerequisite!

There are currently around 60 free flying condors in Arizona with one being the first chick to hatch in the wild in the state in over 100 years.

More on California Condors whether they are in Arizona or Mexico...

More on condors at this source too.

Southern Ocean 2006 - On the Sea

This video was taken in November 2006 in the Southern Ocean, somewhere between Falklands, South Georgia and Antarctica. Albatrosses and petrels fly restlessly in the middle of the ocean. The music is Seagull by Hong Kong vocalist Ruth Tsang.

Cool. I have never seen a Tawny Frogmouth. Is it related to nighthawks and whipoorwills?

Thanks for your visit. I will visit your lense next.

My favorite odd bird is the Tawny Frogmouth. They're so cool. Here at home, I also love watching the Bald Eagles soaring and the little Meadowlarks singing on the roof.
