Ranked #1,183 in Travel & Places, #45,852 overall

Where Did You Say You Come From?

Sometimes when I look at the names of some American and Canadian towns I can't believe that's really their names. But, sure enough when I check them out, they are for real. Our ancestors sure had a simple way to name their towns.

Here I have listed a few odd town names like this.

Robert Louis Stevenson,, once wrote " There is no part of the world where nomenclature is so rich, poetical, humorous, and picturesque."

Valentine, Nebraska

Must Be A Very Loving Town

undefinedHistory of Valentine, Nebraska

As one travels through the lush grasses and myriad lakes of the Sandhills of Nebraska, you may want to slow down a little bit after you pass the junction of Highways 20 and 83. Because, as you top the hill leading down to the bridge, you won't want to miss the panoramic view spread out before you of the Niobrara River and, in the distance, the town of Valentine, "Heart City" of Nebraska, with its scenic backdrop of cliffs and pine trees along the Minnechaduza.

Take a moment and when you see the sign "Historical Bridge" make the turn and you will see another picturesque view of the Niobrara River as it wends its way under the historic cantilevered Bryan Bridge. Look to your right and you will see one of the highest railroad bridges in the nation.

The Town Of Two Egg

Located in Florida

I wonder if they cook a lot of omelettes in this town?

The tiny community of Two Egg is located in northeastern Jackson County in the panhandle of Northwest Florida. Found just a couple of miles northwest of Dellwood on Hwy. 69, Two Egg, Florida's major claim to fame is its curious name. Two Egg T-shirts are a popular tourist item, with the Two Egg town sign being one of the most popular illegal "souvenirs" taken home by visitors.

Origin of its unusual name.
Most of the area's early settlers agree that Two Egg, Florida received its whimsical name as a result of the common practice poor residents had of trading eggs for goods at a local general store. This "two-egg" bartering thus lent its name to the community after a traveling salesman noted the routine during a sales call to the store.

Hot Coffee, Mississipi

From an excerpt on National Geographic Website "Hot Coffee, about halfway between Jackson and Hattiesburg, reality was a cold shower. Hot Coffee isn't a quaint little town; it's not even a town. Instead it's a tiny community of farms, homes, and businesses scattered along two-lane Highway 532. The 12-mile (19-kilometer) stretch known locally as Hot Coffee Road runs from the town of Mount Olive to a crossroads that dates back to pioneer days. There, according to local lore, a resident opened an inn in 1870 and sold coffee to passersby. Apparently the drink was the only memorable thing about the place.

Town of Christmas, Florida

Christmas, Florida is a very tiny town of a little more than 1,000 habitants.

At Christmas time, lots of people mail their letters from that town in order to get the "Christmas postmark on their mail.

I just hope that the residents don't keep their Christmas decorations all year long. What a bore it would be.

Boring, Oregon

Their slogan is "The most exciting place to live."

The community was named for W. H. Boring, an early resident of the area.

With a population of about 12,000, I'm sure they have plenty to do and are not too boring.

Hell, Michigan

I wonder how hot it is in Hell, Michigan?

According to "Wikipedia "There are two leading stories cited by residents for the origin of Hell's name:

The first holds that a pair of German travelers stepped out of a stagecoach one sunny afternoon in the 1830s, and one said to the other, "So schön hell!" - translated as, "So beautifully bright!" Their comments were overheard by some locals and the name stuck.[1]

The second holds that after Michigan gained statehood, George Reeves was asked what he thought the town he helped settle should be called, and replied, "I don't care, you can name it Hell for all I care." The name became official on October 13, 1841.[2]
