Sometimes when I look at the names of some american towns I can't believe that's really their names. But, sure enough when I check them out, they are for real. Our ancestors sure had a simple way to name their towns.

Here I have listed a few odd town names like this.

Robert Louis Stevenson,, one wrote " There is no part of the world where nomenclature is so rich, poetical, humorous, and picturesque."

Town of Christmas, Florida

Christmas, Florida is a very tiny town of a little more than 1,000 habitants.

At Christmas time, lots of people mail their letters from that town in order to get the "Christmas postmark on their mail.

I just hope that the residents don't keep their Christmas decorations all year long. What a bore it would be.

Hell, Michigan

I wonder how hot it is in Hell, Michigan?

According to "Wikipedia "There are two leading stories cited by residents for the origin of Hell's name:

The first holds that a pair of German travelers stepped out of a stagecoach one sunny afternoon in the 1830s, and one said to the other, "So schön hell!" - translated as, "So beautifully bright!" Their comments were overheard by some locals and the name stuck.[1]

The second holds that after Michigan gained statehood, George Reeves was asked what he thought the town he helped settle should be called, and replied, "I don't care, you can name it Hell for all I care." The name became official on October 13, 1841.[2]

Weed, California

Weed is a very small town of about 3,000 people.
Not much is happening there.

Around the 1940's Weed had the world's largest sawmill.
But today, the wood industry is very limited.

According to the information on the Wikipedia site:

"The city's name has been used as the source of humor because the name can be a slang term for cannabis. Ryan Stiles of Whose Line Is It Anyway?, responded to a question about "U.S. cities that would never have a song written about them" by saying "What's the matter with Weed?".

Wikipedia also notes: "The area's landscape is dominated by an immense towering volcano, Mount Shasta, which usually has snow near its peak all year round.
