A Day In The Life Of A Tree
Today is Earth Day, 2008, and I thought what better way to pay tribute to the earth than by presenting an "Ode To A Tree." So, without further pomp and circumstance, here goes:
The first fingers of light dance daintily across my tender limbs, bringing in the new day.
The sun in its mighty presence bears down on me, bringing much needed light and warmth to the budding morning.
A bird sits haughtily amongst my mighty timbers, ushering in the new day with her lilting song.
The bird's song is interrupted as two squirrels scamper across my limbs, involved in their spring mating ritual.
A gentle breeze flows, ruffling my leaves ever so gently. Dislodged, a few leaves flutter, carried aimlessly along the wind's current, toward the ground below.
The bird watches carefully, ever mindful of would be stalkers, as she gathers my broken twigs and leaves below for her nest high in my bough.
As the sun rises further into the sky a student takes a rest underneath my mass while he crams for the test he has next period.
As noon fades to afternoon, the couple soon departs, scurrying along to their busy days.
First the birds, then the squirrels, visit the couple's spot, scavenging for crumbs. Soon, though, the ants move in to salvage and clean up the remaining evidence.
At mid-afternoon the student is back. This time, his energy spent, he rests his eyes while his back leans against my massive trunk, and he takes a much needed nap.
As afternoon fades to early evening, the student rushes away to his dinner.
The bird settles into her nest high above. Her mate has joined her.
The squirrels have settled into the small hollow in my trunk, safe from would be predators of the night.
The wind has calmed and all is quiet. No people, birds, or squirrels stir. Only the eery sound of the hoot owl and the chirping of the crickets nearby can be heard.
Night has fallen.
Earthly Movies
- 001- An Inconvenient Truth

Director-producer Davis Guggenheim (HBO's "Deadwood") captures former Vice President Al Gore in the midst of waging a passionate campaign -- not for the White House, but for the environment. Laying out the facts of global warming without getting political, Gore makes a sobering impression in this Oscar-winning doc on the audiences who hear his message, urging them to act "boldly, quickly and wisely" ... before it's too late to act at all.- 002- March of the Penguins

Award-winning photographer Luc Jacquet takes documentary film to new heights -- and depths -- with his first feature film, a stunning insider's look at the life of the emperor penguin. The product of more than a year of filming in the brutal Antarctic ice, this Oscar-winning Best Documentary presents never-before-captured footage of the penguins' underwater life and explores their steadfast quest for monogamous mates.- 003- Super Size Me

On the heels of recent lawsuits against McDonald's, director Morgan Spurlock takes a hilarious and often terrifying look at the effects of fast food on the human body. For one month, Spurlock eats nothing but McDonald's food, ordering everything on the menu at least once and "super-sizing" his order if asked. With obesity on the rise, Spurlock's film begs the question: Where does personal responsibility end and corporate responsibility begin?- 004- Fahrenheit 9/11

Michael Moore's hard-hitting documentary addresses the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, outlining the reasons the U.S. has become a target for hatred and terrorism. Criticizing President George W. Bush's response to the attacks and reinforcing his theory that the Bush Administration used the tragic event to push its agenda, Moore also traces alleged dealings that connect two generations of the Bush family with Osama bin Laden's clan.- 005- Born Into Brothels

This Oscar-winning documentary is a portrait of several unforgettable children who live in Calcutta's red-light district, where their mothers work as prostitutes. Spurred by the kids' fascination with her camera, Zana Briski, a photographer documenting life in the brothels, decides to teach them photography. As they begin to look at and record their world through new eyes, the kids awaken to their own talents and sense of worth.- Try Netflix free for 14 days

What We Can Do To Reduce Our Footprint
1. Buy organically grown produce from local farmer's markets. You'll be helping the economy of your community, the food won't have traveled thousands of miles, and won't have been grown using dangerous chemicals or have been genetically re-engineered. I personally think natural food tastes better too!
2. Use goods made with all natural fibers such as silk, organic cotton and bamboo. Again, no dangerous chemicals or processes to harm you or the earth.
3. Replace your incandescent light bulbs with fluorescent light bulbs. You'll save money because they last much longer and save energy due to increased efficiency.
4. Invest in a hybrid (or at least more fuel efficient) vehicle. Better yet, if you live in an area where you travel only a few miles to work or shop, buy a bicycle. Again, you'll save money, energy, and you won't be polluting the environment.
5. Buy more energy efficient appliances. Check the Energy Star rating label for estimated energy costs and savings when you buy appliances. More energy efficient appliances cost more up front, but you'll make up that extra cost in energy savings and reduce your footprint as well.
There are many more ways to save energy, recycle, and reduce our footprints on the earth. And, remember, every day is Earth Day!
