Office Furniture Assembly: What You Need to Know Before You Start

If you need to furnish an office and are looking for cost saving alternatives, you might be considering what is known as RTA, or ready to assemble, furniture. You can find ready to assemble office furniture that is stylish, durable and functional at very attractive prices. In order to take advantage of these prices, however, you are going to have to contribute some sweat equity. You will have to assemble the furniture yourself. Does that thought frighten you enough that you might blow the budget and buy pre-constructed furniture instead? Don't let the idea of furniture assembly scare you away from significant savings. Here are a few helpful hints that will allow you to accomplish the assembly and not go ballistic in the process.

Assembling Office Furniture Hint # 1

If you are planning to put together anything bigger than a small file cabinet, recruit someone to help you. This furniture is surprisingly heavy. You'll need help moving it and some of the necessary assembly can be awkward without an extra pair of hands. Be honest with your helper up front, though. Let her know that assembling office furniture can be time consuming. Many pieces can take three hours or more to finish, even for someone who has some experience at this type of task. Larger, more complex pieces might even take six or seven hours.

Assembling Office Furniture Hint # 2

Open the box and take everything out. Take inventory and make sure every item you need is there. Look over the directions and assemble the parts in the order that you will need them. It is most convenient if you can do this near where you want the finished item placed. Position everything within easy reach of your work area.

Assembling Office Furniture Hint # 3

Be patient. You are not a professional furniture assembler, so you might make mistakes. That is one reason why it is wise to wait to tighten the nuts and screws completely until you have the entire piece assembled and feel confident that everything is in the right place. If you find some wood screws that are hard to turn, add a bit of dishwashing detergent to its tip.

Assembling Office Furniture Hint # 4

Feel free to use your own tools. The allen wrenches and screwdrivers that come in the furniture box are there for the convenience of people who do not own any tools. If you have power tools, though, like an electric drill or cordless screwdriver, you can speed up the assembly process by putting them to work.
