Getting Bucked
Ranked #6,008 in Pets & Animals, #150,826 overall
Untrained horse plus me = cowgirl!
I was riding a horse named Dallas on a day of camp at the Book Family Farm. I had ridden Dallas one day before that, and that was only for a few minutes. It was only her sister and herself, so they were calm and happy.
A few weeks later, I came to camp. My instructor wanted me to ride Dallas, so I agreed. As I was tacking up, I knew she wasn't going to obey any of my instructions. So I got scared. When we were about half way through our lesson, all of the horses were in one corner, and I decided to pass another horse. Just as we were passing, Dallas took off in a full gallop and went nuts and threw about 7 huge, lively bucks.
Later that week I found out she had a giant horse fly on her back (or stomach; I can't remember). I got hit and banged, and after about 7 BIG bucks, fell off and landed on my head. I could not stand up and I was so scared of Dallas.
I cracked the outer shell of the helmet. After some time off the horse, they brought me another horse named Atlantic. I rode him, and finished my day as peacefully as I could.
SIT BACK AND RELAX!
The horse is just as scared as you are!
Dallas

Meet Dallas!
Concussions and fears
They're both terrible things.
The helmet that saved my life
I am so lucky (and blessed) I was wearing a helmet. (Why wouldn't I be?) It was an International helmet. They make very safe, comfortable, and cool helmets. I wear that lesson every week in my lesson and I did before then, too. I do not own my own helmet, I know it is crazy. The week in camp we decided I was going to get my own helmet but every one I tried on gave me a headache (at that point I was still recovering from my unknown - at the time - concussion. So as soon as I get another chance, I am going to get my own International (or Troxel - also a very good brand) helmet.(The picture of the helmet, is the same helmet I used!!)

- Nope, nor do I ride horses... :(
-
What was the problem?
Never lean forward - except when in 2 point
What do I do?
How do I stay on a bucking horse?
When a horse is bucking you want to sit back and find confidence. The horse is just as scared and worried as you are. If you lean forward like I did, you'll find yourself in for a little ride. You want to kind of ignore the horse and work on what you need to do. If the horse really isn't cooperating, do a one rain (emergency) stop. If you have ever been bucked give this lens a thumbs up!
Or if you just plain like it :)

Bucked
What do you say?
Tell me, please!
Have you been bucked?

Yes I have been
HorseAndPony says:
Yes. Many times on many different horses and ponies.
BLemley says:
Yes, many times, and taken under low lying tree limbs! The worse was a full gallop, sudden stop, and throwing down her head. That horse was full of tricks! Another one was running full toward a tree, not knowing which way she would suddenly swerve, so you didn't know which way to prepare, and of course, she could sense which way you were leaning ~ and go the other way! I fell off on that one and that was definitely one I remember ~ actually, I remember all her tricks pretty good! Great lense! B : )
lclchors says:
Yep you bet. First time I was 4 can't remember how many since then
KayleeSaddleseatGirl says:
And I have been thrown various ways about 19 times in my 48 years of Saddlebred, Arabian, and National Show Horse training. Mainly due to young horses who run out from under me spooking. I have broken 2 of my ribs and could not do anything for 6 months, I would walk at 7 and ride at a year and a half.
KayleeSaddleseatGirl says:
Well, there are about seven very obvious reasons you fell and did not stick to your seat, You are wearing shorts BIG NO NO, you are wearing rubber boots TOTALLY DANGEROUS, your riding a horse who is obvious not a very good one when (hate to break your heart kid) You are beginner+your in a rope halter (minimal control over a 1000+pound animal, and your position (again, hate to break your heart kid) Is a mess!
Greg Dixon says:
Greg Dixon, Bangor, Northern Ireland, 22, m, GSOH,scared of getting bucked!
Greg Dixon says:
I've only been bucked two times and it did really put me off, now i'M SCARED TO EVER GET BUCKED AGAIN!
Annamadagan says:
I have been bucked about 5 times, maybe?
No I have not
Kellenmadagan7 says:
No, I have not! Thank goodness!
Anything else you may need (ok, want)

- Glad you are safe and still riding. All of my horses and my daughter's pony have had bucking fits. It's always when they are feeling good and we ask for a canter or gallop. My daughter and I spend lots of time riding bareback and working on balance. It helps us stay on when the horses get silly and buck or spook.

- Taking care of horses is a great learning experience, especially at your age! I got my horse at 12 and had her until I was about 20. The tricks she had up her sleeve (well, hooves), taught me a lot about hanging on and getting back up, being responsible, and that life is not always your way! Wouldn't trade that experience for the world. I even suffered a concussion, too, when I was about four. I did not have a helmet at that age, as that was on a family farm horse, of all things. I was riding with my brother and I probably kicked the horse to go faster, and off I fell, hitting my head on a rock. I can remember everything up until my mom held me, and then a faint memory of the hospital. Your lesson was a great one, the fact that your hat cracked certainly put it to you that it could have been far, far worse ~ others will learn from you the importance of wearing a helmet, even when it's hot and a nuisance, or you have to go back to get it. It sounds like you have a ton of fun, are learning a lot, and making all kinds of wonderful ~ some not so wonderful, memories! Great lense, I enjoy your writing! B : )

- I really enjoyed your story and I'm glad that you were not hurt when Dallas bucked. Good thing that you were wearing your helmet! My daughter loves to ride and jump, and I get nervous every time she gets on her horse. I just enjoy petting the horse and feeding him carrots and apples.

- I was riding one time on a narrow, steep trail and the horse started to slip a little, so she lunged ahead to get past where the trail was crumbling. I leaned forward to hang on, and ended up cracking my collarbone on the saddle horn.
But I've never ridden a horse that was bucking. Glad you are recovering from that. Good advice here.

- Good lens! I've been bucked several times, but you just have to get back on and try again. Don't let your fear get the best of you. Dallas sounds like she could use some re-fresher training. I hope your not afraid of her forever! She can certainly be helped.

- You have done a very good job on this lens. I am sorry that you got hurt, I am glad that you are okay though. You gave some very good advice, and it seems like you learned a lot about how to handle a horse from this experience.
Well done, I am proud of you.
Robin :)
