Mistakes in bringing your off line business on line
Havinng developed more than one on line business I am always amazed at some of the attempts by off line businesses to bring their business on line.
The biggest thing I see is what I call "me websites". You know the ones. Some web designer has it all spiffy with the neat flash buttons, the flashing headline, and then you get to the text.
When you start to read the site you find out all about the web site owner. How long they have been in business, what their names are, all of the things they sell and why. You as the visitor see all this information about me the web site owner thus my name of "me websites".
Now that is great and some designers do this because the owner is ever so proud of how great their site looks and shows all the things they want to sell. The problem is that the visitor really doesn't care.
When you arrive at my site I have a very short time to let you know whats in it for you or you have already left. Now nice as I am you really don't give a hoot about me. You only care about you.
Now if I can show you whats in it for you then and only then will you even start to care about me. Even then you only care about me for what I can do for you. That is the important part - every web site MUST be tailored to the visitor not the owner.
Unfortunately, most owners would rather have the ego boost of a "me website" instead of an effective "you website" so that is what a lot of designers sell them.

If you have an off line business with a web presence
You do not just enter through the front door
The web works a bit different than the off line world. The primary difference is how people find you. Now I am going to use an example of a men's store but this applies to anyone. It really doesn't matter if you have a professional business (CPA, Attorney, Insurance Agent, Real Estate Company, etc) or a service business instead of a retail business. I just am using a store because it is easy for everyone to picture. If you have a men's clothing store you have located in a high traffic area, with nice displays in the windows, looking to entice people into your store. Maybe you're in a mall or the main street of your town. You are using various other advertising sources to let people know about your store.
Everyone that visits comes in through the front door. Then walks to which ever area is of interest to them. You can layout your store to take advantage of the flow through your store and market accordingly.
The difference online is that the majority of visitors are going to enter your web site via a ...

Are you collecting your visitors information?
An excerpt from "Common Mistakes" report at Coal Region Web Services
If your business does trade shows or other types of promotions aren't your salesman collecting leads. You don't just hand out brochures - do you?Of course not. You have a raffle, free demonstration or some other way of getting your prospects information. You ask visitors that are interested in your items if they have a business card. You are networking the whole time that you are there to get prospective prospects.
The web is no different except that it can run 24/7/365 without having to be manned. You can generate prospects every day if you set it up properly.
First you have to offer something to your visitor. It is no different than what you would do with a booth at a trade show. Offer something of value and those that are interested will be more than happy to tell you who they are.
There is a good reason to do this and not just on your home page. On the web people are looking for information. They probably found you by searching for a topic on a search engine. You were one of many choices.
They stop by and look quick. If you don't scratch their itch there is always the back button and more choices. You don't get long to catch their attention. Even if you do catch their attention and they really like what you have and bookmark your site because they want to read more but don;t have time you usually lose.
Check your bookmarks and see how many pages you have bookmarked and never returned to again. If you are like me I'll bet you have quite a few and can hardly remember why you bookmarked them originally.
