We train individuals to drive 4x4's in the kind of terrain they are designed for - the Lake District fells, the hills and moors of Scotland, the valleys of South Wales, the sand pits of Sussex and the farmland of Buckinghamshire and Devon. We only train on private land, so we avoid damaging the environment, you can explore exactly how your Land Rover or 4x4 will react to different situations. You or your drivers will learn new techniques, and really find out what 2.5 tonnes of car can deal with! Cliffs, rocky slopes, water traverses and losing traction in mud are all part of the courses. We offer professional training to Health and Safety compliant standards for company drivers who need their 4x4's for work alongside our LANTRA and NPTC ATV and Quad Bike Training.

4x4 Winter Driving CoursesMany companies last winter found that their staff were often unable to get to work because of the weather. Snow and ice brought many businesses to a halt, while 4x4 hire companies found that they were running out of stock to rent out very rapidly.

However, many of those staff didn't know how to drive the vehicles and there was a dramatic rise in 4x4 rollovers. This was often due to drivers using the vehicles in 2wd mode, or forgetting about the raised center of gravity and the fact that 4x4s often weight twice that of a standard saloon car. We have designed our 4x4 Familiarisation and Winter Driving course specifically for this purpose. It fulfils the employer's duty of care to train operators under PUWER and gives the driver a whole range of information regarding both the capabilities and limitations of driving off-road or 4wd vehicles.

We run a lot of courses either 4x4 training or for quad bike training with guys from agriculture, industry, governments and the forces across the whole of the UK. All of these courses are run through Lantra and are certificated to a very high standard. (Lantra doesn't stand for anything, but is a play on words of LANd based TRAining - they're the sector skills council for training for agriculture and land industries and the HSE recognise them as the standard for all of our work).

In between the serious stuff, we also work with corporate clients and manufacturers showing people exactly what the vehicles and machines will do on 4x4 days and Quad Treks.

Training to be a 4x4 Instructor

It's a great job, but getting there is hard!

There's a lot of people who want to do this for a living - and I can't say I blame them, however, it's not a simple as it looks.

Recent changes to legislation mean that many experienced off-road instructors aren't strictly legal at the moment and the main players in the industry know it and are working on it.

Until this is sorted though, it may be out of reach of all but a few well qualified professionals.

Legally, you need to be a DSA Approved Driving Instructor (you've seen the ads - have a look at The Undercover ADI's Driving Instructor Training Advice for more info on whether it's worth it).

Then you'll need to prove that you've been driving 4x4's for 5 years or more, you'll need a First Aid qualification and a H&S qualification geared toward risk assessment and management.

Then you'll need to qualify as a professional off-road driver (off-road training info).

Then you may need to do a 5 day instructional techniques course and a 2 day technical standards verification course.

You'll then need to pay to register, and pay again to become a training provider.

Then you'll need a site to hire (or have your own assessed and approved - more cost).
