Is Offshore Oil Drilling Bad?

HERE'S WHAT I THINK
Is Offshore Oil Drilling Bad?
Offshore oil drilling has been banned for the last 27 years. Should the United States reverse the ban and allow offshore oil drilling? Are you more concerned about possible environmental damage, or the economic risks of rising energy costs? There is no question that the United States economy is struggling because of high energy costs. It seems that the US should at least consider the possibility of offshore oil drilling.
How does the recent BP incident effect your past opinion of offshore oil drilling?
A New Hope or.... Environmental Disaster
Should offshore oil drilling be allowed?
At what level would you consider offshore oil drilling?

Is Offshore Oil Drilling Bad?

No way, you're right!
the truth says:
its really bad if we keep it up anmial life in the oceans could all die

it bad
Offshore Oil Drilling says:
I have been reading a pretty informative blog on offshore drilling which convinced me that it's time to start drilling. We need energy or our entire economy will collapse, even more so than it has already done. Just drill already!

I have come to the conclosen that the people that do want to drill off sore have only one thing in mind and thats $$ people like that make me sick people like that dont care if the enveriorment is damged to the point it can't be fixed people that do suffer and spend a life time trying to fix our home but all $$ hungry people care about is when they will get there next check why cant people just be kind to the envorment every time a rig spills we end up paying up to 2.6 millon dallors out of our wallets to fix it and if the ocen contenus tto be polloted by oil whos to say that it wont spred to freash water as well if that happens all water that we drink will be damged and the only resone its being done is because the president banded closer drilling so to come and think it helps us is a lie we pay 100 times the cost of it to fix spills that happen.

SourHead says:
The US has been drilling offshore in the Gulf of Mexico since the 1960s. America is a safer, and more independent, nation in large part due to the huge oil and gas reserves right off our coasts.
If you drive a car, eat commercially raised food, or have lights in your home, you are a direct beneficiary of offshore drilling.
In the over 50 years of drilling in the gulf, there have been only a few spills, and none as disastrous as the recent BP spill. Of course, there are alternatives to drilling for our own energy sources. We can move back into a cave and catch our meals with spears, or send 100-percent, instead of 75-percent, of our money to Arab and Communist nations who hate us.
So, the simpletons--I'm not calling any names--would just establish a moratorium on offshore drilling, while the more intelligent decision is to understand and mitigate the risk.
To close, if you are reading this on a computer, or have replied on a computer, I hope you've enjoyed the "convenience" the offshore drilling has in large part helped to provide.

To be honest I am not fully up on this topic. However, I also know that offshore drilling has been done in the North Sea for many years. Unfortunately, what has happened in the gulf could happen anywhere, but I think it is a rarity.
kradical23 says:
Great lens! I wouldn't say rigging is bad - it's necessary for the economy. I hope to see more people choosing oil careers as their profession.
TheWhistler says:
We always take the easy way out. In the 70s we were all up in arms about not having alternative fuel, then the crisis passed and so did any ideas of finding new energy sources. Again we have a chance to finally do the right thing for the future. Again we take the easy way out. Drilling won't have an impact for at least five to ten years and oil won't last forever.
Alternate energy is the future in so many ways.
RyanRE says:
I agree with you Julie. I think that we should give it a try as long as we aren't pumping oil into the ocean.
JaguarJulie says:
If done to minimize the environmental negative impact, I would say No and a necessity until we get all that HOT AIR behind us!

Being on a debate team that's arguing this very topic, Ive spent many an hour researching it. And while true that OffOil damages the environment occasionally, it's also true that alternative energy is subject to enviro concern as well. Furthermore, oil is a natural resource and there are numerous natural oil seeps, and the surrounding ecosystems manage them just fine. So, i think that it is in our best interest to drill baby, drill!

Well, look at what is happening now in the gulf due to the BP oil well gushing straight into the ocean. Can this be excused for the sake of a bit of petrol, more pollution and human convenience
