HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Offshore Drilling To Solve US Oil Issue

Offshore drilling for oil is on fire these days as gas prices rise due to our current economic situation. Even the candidates in the upcoming presidential election have been commenting on this issue. Current President Bush even thinks that more offshore rigs in US grounds will lighten the burdens at the pump.

Then we have all the environmentalists come out (you know the ones that ride the bikes as they never go anywhere substantial anyways) and say "you can't do that" as it will harm the environment.

Add in the nay-sayers that ring the bell with U.S. drills in offshore waters will not lower our gas prices as it's an international commodity and it won't change the big global picture.

Well, I've had enough and I'm calling B.S. loud and clear to this situation. I can agree that it "might" have environmental impacts if not protected. I can also agree that oil is an international commodity. What I can't agree with is that it won't change the global picture and the picture close to home.

Eventhough oil is an international commodity it is definitely in the status of a monopoly. While others around the world are paying gas prices anywhere from $3 to $6 a gallon, the monopoly nation is from last recollection paying about twenty cents a gallon, a direct reflection of the oil production.

I say drill and drill deep!

Offshore Drilling - McCain Point-Counterpoint

Words of Sen. John McCain

"The stakes are high for our citizens and for our economy"

"The next president must be willing to break with the energy policies, not just of the current administration, but the administrations that preceded it, and lead a great national campaign to achieve energy security for America"

"I'm all for recycling -- but it's better applied to paper and plastic than to the failed policies of the 1970s"

"We have proven oil reserves of at least 21 billion barrels in the United States. But a broad federal moratorium stands in the way of energy exploration and production. And I believe it is time for the federal government to lift these restrictions and to put our own reserves to use."
