Middle Ages To Fluid Mechanics

It's a shape we're all familiar with but often don't know what to call - the ogee. It's found in architecture and in retro fabric patterns...
But what is it really and why is it used in fluid mechanics?

The Ogive

The Ogive is a shape formed from two reflecting curves whose curve becomes increasingly shallow until the point it is a flat line.

Confused?
Think "bullet shaped".

The Ogee

Ogees are a type of ogive.
Sort of.
Instead of reflecting, the curve changes at the point of flatness and begins increasing again.
Another way of defining the ogee is to say that the ogee shape is formed from "s" shaped curves that are continuous lines containing both a concave and convex curve.

The word ogee is also used to describe a closed shape made up of four of the descreasing curves.

"An arch with a pointed apex, formed by the intersection of two S curves
usually confined to decoration and not used in arcade arches. Ogee arches were used only in the late Gothic period."

The Inflection Point

How the ogee curve is described mathematically.

The unusual beauty of the ogee is based on its change from convex to concave curvature. The exact point of change is called the Inflection Point.
