Out With The Old.........In With The New

Every once in awhile, a solid, nationally-ranked football program goes through a transition period. The Ohio State Buckeyes have had more than their fair share of turmoil in the last 12 months. The merchandise-for-tattoos scandal, eventual defection of Terrelle Pryor and ousting of Jim Tressel, have all taken their toll.

Luke Fickell was hired from his defensive coordinator duties to take over the reigns of the team and get back to title contention. With the mass exodus of several key players, departure of their former coach and sanctions handed down by the NCAA, not much was expected from this year's team. The Buckeyes have managed to eek out some key wins against divisional foes and become bowl eligible, even though they are probation. I look for the Buckeyes to be a fantastic spoiler moving forward, causing mass chaos for the other Big 10 teams trying to win the league title.

(UPDATE : Urban Meyer has taken over as Ohio State's new head coach and has retained Luke Fickell to be his Defensive Coordinator / Linebacks coach.)

Clocking in as the 4th largest stadium in the NCAA, Ohio Stadium (aka. "The Horseshoe") still does not have a permanent lighting system. On the rare occasion that a night game has been scheduled, the University brings in temporary lighting structures to facilitate the game.

(Side Note : Their last night game was played in 2005 against the Texas Longhorns)

Notorious for the hostile atmosphere and unbelievably loud crowd noise, most NCAA teams dread playing OSU at the Horsehoe. The stadium gets its nickname due to its double-decker horseshoe shape and aesthetic. The school record is 106,033 in attendance to see the team lose vs. USC Trojans in 2009.
