Ohio Grows A Lot Of Presidents and Candidates!
Ohio's Presidential Particulars
Since I have been putting Ohio's history into stories for various projects over the years, I have collected quite a few unusual facts. Here's some interesting Presidential Particulars --
Ohio grows a lot of presidents and presidential candidates! EIGHT presidents came from Ohio: William Henry Harrison, Ulysses S. Grant, Rutherford Hayes, James Garfield, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley, William Howard Taft and William G. Harding.
Arguably the most Persistent Presidential Candidate and the FIRST female candidate to run for President, Victoria Woodhull is from Homer Ohio. I tell her story in EVE's program REMARKABLE OHIOANS. She actually ran against Ohioan James Garfield in 1872 and she chose Abolitionist and Ex-Slave Frederick Doulass as her VP (of course, he didn't seem to know anything about it)! She actually racked up some 3000 votes - and this in a time when women couldn't even vote! She ran again in several other elections after that.
Later, Marie Brehm from Sandusky was the nation's first female Vice-Presidential Candidate! She ran on the Prohibition Ticket in 1924.
