I have had hundreds of great purchases on Ebay, but I've had a few bad ones too. One example was a violin I purchased for about $40 (the price alone should have alarmed me). It ended up being a very poorly made instrument that was virtually unplayable. On top of that, the smoke stench was so strong that I'm pretty sure it had been in a fire.

It is important that before you place a bid, you investigate the seller by looking at his/her feedback. 98% positive might look good (I personally try not to buy from anyone with a feedback score of less than 99%), but if you check further and see that the seller has had more than one negative in the past month or two, this might be a good person to avoid. Also, look beyond the feedback score and see what customers have written about the seller.

One more thing to look at is the price. Yes, we are trying to look for bargains and get the best price. But, if you spend $40 on a bad product as I did, you'll soon learn that the cheapest products end up costing you the most. Be realistic in what you expect to pay.

And finally, beware of sellers whose "Buy it now" price is ridiculously low, but their shipping fee is ridiculously high. Sellers who do this are intentionally cheating Ebay out of a share of the final auction price. If they'd bite the hand that feeds them, they'll bite you too.

Basically, you'll find that if you use common sense and trust your instincts, you'll have a good shopping experience on eBay.
