The okapi is a herd animal found in Africa. It looks like someone started to paint a zebra but then ran out of striped paint and so they just finished off with a burgundy-brown color!
Okapi live in forested areas of central Africa. They were only first discovered by Europeans and outsiders in the early 1900s but historians have found evidence that the ancient Egyptians knew about this mammal. Okapi are related most closely to giraffe, having very similar body types and diets.
The okapi has an unsually long tongue and is one of the few animals that is able to clean it's own eyes and ears!
What do Okapi eat?
Okapi are "browsers" which means they eat leaves from small plants and trees. Okapi will eat leaves from over 100 different types of plants, which makes finding food easy!
