Okapi, who are you?
Everyone knows they are the only mammal that can clean its ears with its 14 inch tongue and this long tongue is used to pull leaves off of trees..;
But did you know:
The okapi keeps itself very clean by licking its body. Zoo keepers take advantage of this habit when an okapi needs medication by pouring it over the animal's back. The okapi licks it off at once and ingests the medicine.
Both the giraffe and the Okapi belong to the family Giraffidea in the order Artiodactly.
Other interesting quick facts about the Okapi: 1. Okapi are ruminants (like cows) which means that they swallow their food without chewing it and then regurgitate a partly-digested "cud" which they chew and then swallow for the last time. 2. The okapi is a nocturnal animal, which means that it is mostly active at night. 3. Okapis are found in the thick undergrowth of the Ituri Forest. The Ituri Forest is a dense tropical rain forest in the northern part of the Congo River Basin in the Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire).

The Okapi
The Okapi (Okapia johnstoni; ) is a giraffid artiodactyl mammal native to the Ituri Rainforest, located in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, in central Africa. Although the Okapi bears striped markings reminiscent of the zebra, it is most closely related to the giraffe. Unknown to Europeans until 1901, today there are approximately 10,000 - 20,000 in the wild and only 40 different worldwide institutions display them. National Zoological Gardens of South Africa: National Zoo gets rare okapis.

- I had never heard of an Okapi until my 8 yr old grandson taught me about them. Since then I keep seeing or hearing the name. Isn't that funny how that happens. I really enjoyed this lens and learning more about the Okapi and will share this with my grandson.
