Relief from Colds, Flu and Sinusitis

Olbas Oil is a natural product I use on a regular basis to avoid developing Sinusitis and to help me breathe whilst I sleep due to allergies.

Olbas Oil, to me, is a life saver in this respect. It's reasonably priced, smells gorgeous and is very effective and preventing sinus infection and for relieving the symptoms of cold, flu and allergies.

This lens will list the reasons why I recommend that you use Olbas Oil whenever you catch a cold or Flu.

What is Sinusitis?

Your Sinuses are air-filled cavities which are lined with mucus membrane. Yep, the same things that produce all that goo when you have a cold. Eww! They are located in the bones of your face or just at the top of your nose for the less medically-minded of us.

Sinusitis is an inflammation of these same membranes as a result of viruses, infections, allergies, nasal polyps and hay fever.

When this inflammation occurs, the lining of the sinuses swell up which in turn blocks up the channel that provides draining. This produces the typical 'stuffed up' feeling we all know. In sinusitis things are a lot worse and the build up of mucus causes pressure, pain and headaches. It may also cause fever and pain around the eyes.

Treatment can involve antibiotics, nasal drainage, antihistamines, vaporizers or steam inhalation.

The Time before Olbas Oil

Was there ever a time?

I haven't always used Olbas Oil. Like most people I relied on Vicks Vapour Rub or decongestants to ease my flu/cold symptoms.

However, apart from the decongestants, the products I was using didn't help much at all.

The problem with decongestants is that you can only take them for a maximum of 7 days after which you tend to suffer from the exact symptoms which you are using them to treat: a blocked nose.

This is what you wish would happen if you've ever suffered from Sinusitis

Why I use Olbas Oil

As someone who is at increased risk of Sinusitis a way to help prevent this infection was important to me. Without any form of decongestants in oil, liquid, spray or tablet form, all I had to rely on was my vast supply of tissues. In order to keep Sinusitis at bay I would have to blow my nose approximately 10+ times a day, sometimes more, during a cold or Flu.

Of course, this often led to a very sore nose and it wasn't always possible for me to do. Apart from the fact it was extremely messy, it could also be very painful as the pressure inside of my sinus cavities increased.

This is where Olbas Oil came in.

I first found it in the form of an inhaler, a device which you place in one nostril at a time and sniff hard whilst blocking the other nostril. The Vicks inhaler was okay but it never prevented the infection from developing. However, the Olbas Oil inhaler did.

Every time I used the inhaler I could actually feel the muck inside of my sinuses and nose moving away from the inside walls. It sounds disgusting but it's the only way I can describe it. What I could do then was to swallow it or blow it back out. It took over a week of using the inhaler for the muck to clear but there was no sign of an infection at all. From the moment I started using Olbas Oil, I have developed no sinus infection at all whenever I catch a cold or Flu.

What a relief! No more pain, or antibiotics. No more Sinus problems.

Try these additional methods for Sinus problems

Use these on their own or in conjunction with Olbas Oil

Yoga

Yoga can work well for Sinus problems as your feet can be sometimes higher than your head. This may help to relieve the pressure on the sinuses. A couple of moves definitely worthwhile trying are The Shoulder Stand and The Plough.

Links to Yoga Positions:

The Plough Pose - Yoga Pose
Plow Pose
Supported Shoulderstand

Practice as much as you can with these positions as the more you can do them comfortably the more time your sinuses will have to open up fully.

Nasal Irrigation

By swishing a lukewarm solution of salt and water through your nasal cavities can help with chronic sinusitis. Buy a Neti pot which has been used in India for centuries to help clear the sinuses. The pot looks more like an Aladdin's Lamp and you need to breathe through your mouth not your nose whilst using it.

Homeopathy

Remedies that can help with Sinus problems are Kali Bic 30c or Hepar sulph 6c.

I still use Olbas Oil on a regular basis. I use it every night on a cuddly dog that I place up against my nose. As a sufferer of allergies from the cat and hayfever it helps me to sleep a lot easier every night. On hand, I have my Olbas Oil inhaler ready for when I catch a cold. I now cannot do without Olbas Oil and I buy the liquid form every so often to help me to sleep at night.

I couldn't recommend it highly enough for anyone who catches a cold or suffers from Sinusitis.

Have you ever used Olbas Oil? If not, would you consider it?

I would love to know your personal experiences!

Wow, I guess I have sinusitis as well. I've been using a product, prescribed by my physician, called nasonex, which is a nasal spray that works. But I am now wondering whether that olbas oil of yours is available in the Netherlands.

Oh, and blessed by another squidangel :)
