    Know this, O worthy and diligent lensmaster;
With accomplishment you’ve earned a tryster.
As a token of immense appreciation expressed,
A squid angel leaves this lens heartily blessed.
On a rendering that is sparkling in its own right,
    Propagating an appealing thought well and quite;
    If you were to notice a slender shimmering crust;
From the angel’s wand, it is a spill of stardust.

Very detailed lens , with so many baby boomers reaching this point in their lives it's a very current issue. There may be cultural differences on how we treat the elderly that may be disappearing due to the easier exchange of information that the internet has brought. Thanks fro a very informative lens..

The young always seem to know what is best for the old and sometimes those decisions are made as if the person or people making them will never grow old. What happened to a time when age was respected and loved instead of being thought of as a burden on society. It is very sad to think that we have come so far and yet we have not yet moved forward.
  • WaynesWorld Feb 15, 2012 @ 9:10 pm | delete
I was going to post in your Duel module but you evidently thought you had a 'pro' and a 'con' going when both are 'cons'.
    *
The aged have put in their time here on the planet and I feel we have a duty to Uplift and Esteem are seniors. Remember the "Golden Rule" Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Period.
As much as I hate the idea of Socialism I think with the costs of insurance and medical costs we should all have health care provided by the taxes we already pay.
Anyone that sees the elderly as "inconveniences" are themselves destined to be the same or worse. Whether you believe in GOD or karma you should believe in "what goes around comes around." I have seen that too many times in my own life to simply rack it up as coincidences.
I think with work being scarcer and scarcer as we grow older we should all consider the non-linear fields of network marketing where whether you are old or young has no distinction as it does in traditional corporate businesses. Direct message me anyone that would like a totally free look at a network marketing business that welcomes the elderly with open arms.

Well, some may indeed say that I have reached old age. So, reflecting with the wisdom I have garnered over the years, old age can be indeed frightening if you lose your health, companionship, and financial stability.
  • Con Feb 1, 2012 @ 2:58 am | delete
Even in old age, a man/woman has a lot of potential to do and be busy about. If they think about how to make others their age come to terms with life in confidence and style, there are so many things yet to do. With so much time and wisdom, they can make things happen "-)

The information is very timely. An aging population creates a host of challenges for the nation and family members, but there are opportunities, as well. My siblings and I are blessed that our parents are still in pretty good health, despite being in their 80s. We cherish each day we can spend with them. Thanks for sharing this information.

This is a very detailed and informative lens. I'm only middle aged but I don't have the energy and vigor of my teenage and college years. I feel like old age can be lonely especially in the modern world where children move away from their parents and/or often don't have the time to care for them because of work. That's why it's important to stay physically and especially mentally active to do your best to fight off the diseases and problems of old age.

Great lens! I agree everybody wants to live long but they don't want to grow old. All we can do is pay great attention to our health as we age-get exercise, eat right, avoid sugar and processed foods and do what we can to keep our bodies in good shape as we get older.

This governor who proposes the duty to die is obviously still young and foolish, no matter what his chronological age.
  • Wordwinder Dec 9, 2011 @ 10:54 am | delete
Old age is an inevitability. The quality of life in this phase of life can be ensured only when society recognizes the natural right of every individual to dignified living and does not measure the worth of the older generations - as well as those of younger and more able ones - merely in immediate economic terms. Such an outlook is alas a casualty in today's world that is driven by the specter of unbridled economic development rather than the necessity of a sustainable model of growth. A thought provoking lens.

Whether old or young we all want to be treated with dignity. This becomes especially important when we are vulnerable.
  • Nov 30, 2011 @ 3:20 am | delete
Those were really some big points to think upon. These old age problems are really very tough ones. Sometimes it's better to die rather than having such problematic life. Well, there are various home care agencies working in the betterment of these old peoples.
  • mermaidlife Nov 29, 2011 @ 3:59 am | delete
My brother made a very terse but rather deep comment recently which startled the rest of us lol, he said, "if you are not getting older, you're dead." Here's wishing we all grow old in grace and good health.

Our society doesn't appreciate the elderly. We have become a disposable society which includes our elderly. This is sad. We need to change that trend. The older generations still have a lot to give and many are still very productive individuals.
  • veryirie Nov 16, 2011 @ 1:33 pm | delete
Every age has its problems and the older I get, I'm just trying to find new ways to counteract the negative parts that are determined to "get in the way". :)
  • dbodnariuc Nov 12, 2011 @ 11:58 am | delete
It is clear, the society changed the way we perceive the elderly. But we as a race have a way to always bounce back. I am sure that this will change back sometime soon in the future. We have to keep our values, and I have faith in humanity.
  • Auntie_D Nov 6, 2011 @ 1:17 am | delete
There are plenty of active and alert older people. We are not depressed, we don't worry about health issues or medications because we are healthy and aren't on medications. We keep busy with our minds, learning something new each day. We read, socialize, cook, and do volunteer work. Yes, we are aging and do have some aches and pains but there are quite a few who are not the bleak people you have described. Are you writing about people past eighty years? Or ninety? If so, then I can understand.
  • MSE Nov 5, 2011 @ 11:51 am | delete
We all grow older, yet it is amazing the negative attitude so many have towards older people. Anyway, thanks for an insightful lens. Thumbs up!

Fantastic lens! Simply a wonderful look into old life that helps clarify that growing old is nothing to fear. I myself have worked on age bias that I found myself part of... mainly I was putting on a music clinic at a senior rec center and my inclination was to talk down, as if there were disabilities to be accounted for, I am not proud of this, but my awareness and meditation helped me to see everyone as equally capable until otherwise seen to need extra help or attention. These women, and yes it was all women who attended, were incredibly intelligent and I had a lot to learn myself, and after that first session of my bias, each one grew my understanding into a mutually beneficial experience for myself and these wonderful people.

Really great, informative lens. There are a lot of special older people in my life, and I am more aware than ever of mortality, health, and appreciating the small things. Good to see this state of life acknowledged in such an honest and helpful way.
  • crstnblue Oct 29, 2011 @ 6:14 am | delete
Namaste je (hope I wrote it correctly) & thanks for this very informative lens!
Indeed, old age it's a sensitive subject and part of our (sometimes) cruel reality.
Besides illnesses, for lonely elders (or any of us), depression is most present feeling in their life. I wish that could be overcomes when one manages to become friend with her/ himself, have a roof above and enjoys further the journey...
Ufff, everything seems to be easy in theory, while real actions, circumstances and each individual capabilities may generate other result...
To be honest, I'm really scared to grow old... :(
  • RuralFrance Oct 24, 2011 @ 10:52 am | delete
If only it was so simple. My mother won't exercise, won't listen to anything, she's just given up. She's capable of doing a lot but just can't be bothered. She's actually very healthy but overweight. It's not a one size fits all scenario.
  • NightMagic Oct 23, 2011 @ 2:15 pm | delete
This is one of the best lenses I've read. I agree with you on almost everything especially eating healthy. Some older people can no longer stand long enough to make a healthy meal so they survive on T.V. Dinners (so unhealthy & sad). I think a lot of the problem is --- most of their family are too busy with their own lives and won't make the time to help them out even if it is just once in awhile. Hopefully I will never find myself in spot like that.
    Thanks for the great lens..

What a great and detailed lens! Extremely informative
  • TorontoPersonalTrainer Oct 16, 2011 @ 2:43 pm | delete
Excellent article. As a personal trainer, I find that just getting the elderly to do some squats (which can be learned here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kp4zZmVc2nQ) throughout the day will go a long way towards healthy, functional living.

With strong legs, there is less of a chance of developing shuffle steps. Shuffle steps are caused by a fear of falling, which is caused by weakness. If you have doubts about your legs' ability to support yourself, you'll start to shuffle step.

    Again, great article!

I used to work in a care home for the elderly and I completly respect them and the things they have to go through, my grandma is slowly losing the plot and no longer the person she was, but thats ok because now she is a new person with a really naughty sense of humour, as for medical stuff, at 87 she has had a quadruple heart bypass, brain tumour, throat cancer (chemo etc) and various skin cancers, she is still laughing though bless her!

what a wonderful lens. I had thought about taking care of my mom when she aged. I'd see daughters helping shop with their aging mothers....and looked forward to that time. Unfortunately, it was not to be. Now that my kids are grown and gone, it would have been the perfect time to get to know my mother all over again, like she did for her mom.

Hi! Great lens. You are absolutely right. Our society forgot about the advances coming by with age. We just celebrate youth or 'youth-look-alike' and worry about retirement programs. We should step back and ask ourself how the society can use the experience and wisdom coming with age. Who cares about wrinkles. Smiles counts! All the best from the sunny sides of the Alps!

    Hello sukkran,
I just want to say that I really love reading your lens here. I would like to adhere that It is funny how everyone wants to live long but no one wants to grow old. This is true. Especially to women. heheheh..

Invaluable lens and flagging up an area where modern western society is badly serving and failing a huge sector of our population.
  • ChrisDay Apr 26, 2011 @ 11:13 pm | delete
For some, old age can be a misery. Modern western society does not honour, respect or nurture the aged. These are the challenges. I am personally sure that, for those who can, avoiding pharmaceuticals, avoiding vaccination, exercising mind and body and eating healthily are the best insurances against so many of the problems you describe. Play is also vital, for those who can.

Our youth loving North American society is missing out on the finest wisdom by treating some members (not all) as too elderly to take advice from. Our elderly know human nature and how to get along with others more than any other segment of our population. To solve the world's most pressing problems, the skills that the elderly all ready possess will be key, I believe. Great lens! Take Good Care, Rose

    Changing Trends of Old Age
In today's fast paced life, nothing is permanent but change. Change has become acceptable to population of all ages. Even older persons, who are known for famous adage - "Old Habits Die Hard" are talking about change, they are all set to change their old habits of adjusting or adapting themselves in whatever environment

My next birthday I will be 60! So this lens speaks to me, in many ways. Amazing to think--over 1 Billion people aged 60 or over in the year 2025? I firmly believe we must change these false beliefs about aging and dying. I think the world is ripe to change our thinking in this regard, since so many of us are in the same so called club. What a beautiful opportunity!! Thank you!

I'd have to say that much of the problems of old age has to do with false beliefs about aging, a negative perception of aging in American Society etc. Old people feel discarded in our (American) culture. The way I see it is--it doesn't have to be this way.

People forget that from the day we're born, we start to die (slowly). This is natural and we shouldn't be afraid of old age. We should try to live a healthy life starting on our 20's or 30's, keep our brain busy and exercise a lot. We should also live each day like if it were our last day.

I love the quote, "Old age isn't for sissies". Of course, any age isn't what is used to be. I'm almost 60. When my grandma was my age she was gray, wore an apron and support hose. I'm still a pretty hot chick! Biggest challenges have been menopause and looking for tinnitus relief

Great lens! I must agree that OLD Age is a gift because not so many of us will reach the age of 60 or 70. I guess more than 50% of us will die at a younger age due to our lifestyle. Taking this into consideration, I think it is best if we simply embrace life itself and forget about getting older each day. Live your life and be happy always. 5*
