Buy an Old English Sheepdog Christmas Ornament for Your Tree

I love these Old English Sheepdog Christmas ornaments as they remind me of our first family dog. We got our very first Old English Sheepdog just before Christmas. My parents had planned on keeping him at a friends house until Christmas morning, but things don't always go as planned.....Digby had been living on a farm and when my parents picked him up he was covered in cow excrement and stunk to high heaven!

The temperatures in the UK were pretty bitter that evening (definitely below zero) and yet my parents chose to bring Digby home with the windows down in the car because the smell was that bad. Consequently it meant that my brother and I got our Christmas present early, although we weren't quite as impressed as we would normally have been - trust me the smell was THAT bad!

Poor Digby's introduction to our family was to go straight down to the vets the next morning to get his coat shorn off (it was too knotted to do anything else with). Old English Sheepdogs look really funny when they've been shaved because their legs look so spindly! He soon perked up, however when he thought we'd brought him an indoor toilet......our poor Christmas tree!

We've had a few Old English Sheepdogs since Digby and so it's great that we can find Old English Sheepdog Christmas ornaments to remind us of our first Christmas as a dog owning family. If you know anyone who loves these incredibly loyal and affectionate dogs then they would love a Christmas ornament as a gift.

This is my absolute favorite as it looks just like Digby (after his hair grew back that is!), even the way he's sitting up is like our Digby - gorgeous!

Don't Give Pets for Christmas

Now although we had our Old English Sheepdog as a Christmas gift it's really not something that I recommend. The amount of dogs and cats that are abandoned after Christmas is shocking and you really have to make a commitment before owning a pet. Our parents had been considering a dog for a while and it just happened that they heard about Digby in December as his owner was moving overseas so they thought they'd call him our Christmas present.

A lot of Old English Sheepdogs were given at Christmas time around this time for two reasons - one was the movie Digby, the Biggest Dog in the World and the other was the running of the Dulux ad campaign featuring Old English Sheepdog puppies. By February people were starting to realize that these cute little puppies grew up into big dogs, in fact dogs that were just too big for their family. Years later and I still can't believe that people didn't think through the implications before purchasing a puppy.

Why am I talking about this? Well we started to 'rescue' Old English Sheepdogs that had outgrown their original families and we had some lovely dogs for periods until we found them better homes.

Our first 'guest' was Patch, his original family had been calling him Digby and we couldn't have two in the house so on the way home dad and I started calling him Patch and it stuck.

Patch was extremely affectionate, but he was definitely a dog that 'needed' to be the only dog in the house, he constantly wanted affection and poor Digby was being sidelined a little. We found a couple who seemed to be a good fit and were they ever........we used to see them driving around town sometimes and the wife would be in the back because Patch liked sitting in the front (with the seatbelt on)!

When we ran into the couple a few months later it emerged that Patch really was ruling the roost in other ways too. The man used to work shift work and when he came home during the night Patch would be on the bed with his wife and would refuse to get off so he would sleep in the spare room and let Patch go back to sleep!!!!

If this Old English Sheepdog had black over one eye it could almost be Patch with his cheeky smile, he used to sit like this when the camera was out. We took a picture of my parents in fancy dress one year before they went out and after the film was developed we saw that Patch was sitting next to them posing for the camera!!!

This is adorable. Unless things change, probably not. It is kind of hard celebrating Christmas when it is just 2 of you. Hubby just says forget it. We have a Christmas dinner but usually don't decorate.

Good for you for saving these beautiful dogs! And good for you for reminding people that puppies make bad Christmas gifts! Even if I didn't like the wonderful collection of ornaments (which I really do), I would give you 5 paws just for your message!
