A Vintage Recipe for Old Fashioned Raisin Pie

This handwritten recipe for Old Fashioned Raisin Pie was handed down to me from my great-aunt Susy. On the front of the recipe is written Old Fashioned Pie. On the back of the recipe, the scribe has written the words Raisin Pie and this pie is known by both names.

This pie has many names, in fact. The Amish call it funeral pie, because it can be prepared ahead of time and keeps well for a few days.

This is an easy pie recipe and an economical one with many variations, but one that is rarely seen these days. If you make it for your gathering, it is unlikely to have competition from other similar pies, and will bring you plenty of rave reviews.

It can be made with ingredients most of us already have on hand. Many of the ingredients can be substituted for whatever you have on hand, which makes this a frugal recipe.

This is a vintage recipe from my Aunt Susy's collection, and the origins of this recipe are unknown. It is likely that your grandmother used to make old fashioned pie. It is very delicious, so why not bake one of these old fashioned raisin pies today?

For Your Old Fashioned Raisin Pie

Here are simple instructions for making a homemade pie crust for your Old Fashioned Pie. Remember, your pie will have a top crust, so you will need to make two of these.

This chef makes it look so easy! The key is to keep the butter cold and do not let it get too soft.

Of course, you could also use a ready-made pie crust; but, why do that when the homemade pie crust is this simple?

Why not give it a try? You can always have a Pillsbury crust on hand in case of emergency.

I don't think I'd be a fan of raisin pie, especially the one that uses orange juice. What's the origins of a raisin pie anyways?

I miss my Mum's pies, she made wonderful pastry. Of course these days pastry is recognised as being so fattening that we don't eat many pies, and we rarely make any. My Mum used to make great pies and cakes. I think for many people their Mum's baking can't be replaced. Nicely done, blessed.

I don't care for raisin anything (just plain raisins) but I bet for raisin lovers this pie is delicious!
  • Ruthi Dec 13, 2011 @ 10:37 am | delete
You sure brought back memories, as I haven't had Raisin Pie since I was a kid and my mom baked it on occasion.
  • ChrissLJ Dec 10, 2011 @ 9:33 am | delete
We used to make one of these for my Grandpa every year for his birthday. It was his absolute favorite dessert, and Grandma refused to make them... or let him bake. They bring back fond memories. He was one of my most favorite people growing up.
  • AlleyCatLane Dec 7, 2011 @ 6:28 pm | delete
I have never heard of raisen pie. Looks great and easy though. Blessed.
