Explore the Old Los Angeles Zoo at Griffith Park!
Did you know that the city of Los Angeles has an old, abandoned zoo that you can explore? The zoo is part of Griffith Park. You can hike or drive to the old zoo and spend an afternoon exploring the cave-like enclosures that once housed animals. It is very different from the types of habitats found at modern zoos! Read on to learn more about the Old Los Angeles Zoo and how to visit.
Old L.A. Zoo History
The old L.A. zoo opened in 1912 and operated there until 1965, when it moved to a new location within Griffith Park. Many of the structures were built in the 1930s by Works Progress Administration (WPA) Workers. The zoo once was home to bears, lions, monkeys, elephants, reptiles and other animals.

- Interesting. It's surprising it hasn't been torn down and sold so something new could be built over it. It's nice when they leave a little piece of history.

- I think part of the reason it has survived is that its within Griffith Park, the largest park in Los Angeles. It is an interesting part of LA history!
