Hard Case for Old 13" Macbook: My Review of iPearl

Ranked #1,260 in Computers & Electronics, #20,645 overall

Protecting My Macbook Without Breaking the Bank

I love my old 13" Macbook, except for one thing: the white plastic case is brittle and has a few cracks. Rather than pay for expensive repairs, I bought a hard case for $17.50.

I was looking for a tough case more than a decorative one. I settled on a Macbook cover with lots of good reviews.

I was afraid from the photos that the iPearl case by mCover would be cheap-looking, but I was mostly buying it for protection. To my surprise, this hard case looks good. More importantly, it covers the cracks in my Macbook without covering up anything it shouldn't, and it seems sturdy.

Review of iPearl Hard Case for Macbook

Case for pre-2009, original 13" Macbooks: Model A1181 (White)

Colors of iPearl Macbook Hard Shell Case Don't worry, it comes in other colors than purple. In fact, it comes in most of the classic old iMac colors -- remember original iMacs that started the whole i-whatsit craze?

My photo doesn't really show the fact that the white lit-up Apple stands out nicely through the transparent colored plastic case.

iPearl Macbook Hard Shell Case: clipsA little less than 2mm thick, the plastic case is hard but slightly flexible, not brittle. It seems more rugged and capable of withstanding impacts than the Macbook's case. It doesn't seem particularly scratch-proof, but not scratch-prone either.

Clips along the sides of the case clamp snugly to the edges of the Macbook screen and bottom. The case can be peeled off once you clip it on, but it takes a little effort; it stays put.

Cutouts on the sides and back allow access to ports, CD slot, fan vents and hinge.

iPearl Macbook Hard Shell Case: bottom

The bottom has vents to let heat escape, but protects the battery (except for the battery test button) and that belly button screw which fell off my Macbook five seconds after I started using it.

The front two corners rest on sturdy rubber feet; the back two have optional legs that flip open to lift the Macbook up at a slight tilt for ergonomics and to allow air circulation underneath. The latter may actually prolong the Macbook's life.

Bottom Line: I like it! I'm glad I didn't shell out $40 for a more expensive Macbook cover that probably wouldn't have been any better. (Of course, this cover was originally $40; it's been marked down.)

Apple will fix the breaking/cracking around the sides (due to the magnets) for free even if it is out of warranty. Just make an apt. at Apple and they will take care of you! Great Company!

Thanks for the review! I am a new owner (my first MacBook) of the old 13.3 model of the white MacBook. I was looking all over for a purple case at a reasonable price, so thanks for the post!

I don't even have a mac-book and I want one of these. I love how you explained everything. This is the kind of review I want to see when I'm looking for a certain product. Great lens!
