Oh I Do Like To Be Beside The Seaside ! Vintage Postcards of Blackpool

Blackpool is a seaside town on the Lancashire coast, about 40 miles north of Manchester. In 1846 a railway link to the town was completed and this resulted in a rapid growth of tourism and of the town itself. The 158 metre Blackpool Tower, based on the Eiffel Tower, opened in 1894. During the second world war my mother often took me to Blackpool to stay with my aunt who ran a boarding house in Bispham. It was also fairly safe from bombing !! The number of tourists has fallen greatly since the 1960s when people began flying to the Mediterranean resorts, but Blackpool remains one of the country's most popular holiday spots.

To see our collecton of over 50 (wow!) old postcards of Blackpool, visit our website, Postcards of the Past.

George Formby at iTunes (and one with Stanley Holloway !)

Listen to George While You Look at the Postcards !

When I was a lot younger, George Formby was the biggest star of the day - in the UK. He represented what Blackpool was - brash, slightly vulgar and a lot of fun. Everyone hummed and sang his comic songs with their suggestive lyrics and double entendres, and eagerly awaited his latest film. Listen to excerpts from some of his songs - and buy them if you want ! Those vintage postcards were so classy weren't they? Not like some of the tacky ones you see these days!!

I agree - although today's photos are obviously much better, the postcard design leaves a lot to be desired !

I've never been to Blackpool, but I love these old cards.I did have a great holiday in Bournemough the year of the coronation of our Queen Elizabeth though, they were just taking down the stands, when we went on a day trip to London. I remember it like it was yesterday!

Some great postcard images of Blackpool & Bispham - having been born and bred in Blackpool, it is really nice to see how it has changed over the years and looking at how places and streets used to look is kind of weird, yet really interesting.
Thinking I have walked down streets recently that your postcard images show from decades ago and the fact others (possibly my family) walked down.

I know how you feel. I have a cousin who was born and married in Bispham and she - now in her 80s - loves to look at the old views. I remember Blackpool from my childhood when we used to stay with my aunt at her boarding house on Haddon Road in Bispham.
