Charleston, SC, in Vintage Postcards
Charleston is the oldest and - after Columbia - the second largest city in the US State of South Carolina, with a population (2008) of about 112,000. The city lies just south of the mid-point of South Carolina's coastline, at the confluence of the Ashley and Cooper rivers. Its name is derived from Charles Towne, after King Charles II of England.
The dance, the Charleston, was named after the city. It became a popular dance rhythm in the United States as a result of a 1923 tune called "The Charleston" by James P. Johnson, which originated in the Broadway show "Runnin' Wild", and became one of the most popular hits of the decade.
