Oxford and the University in Vintage Postcards
The City and University of Oxford can be found about 55 miles north-west of London. The city centre is dominated by the major colleges of the University, but there is also an excellent shopping centre with plenty of restaurants, some famous old pubs, and a covered market. As with Cambridge, there are throngs of tourists who, with the student population, make the city a bustling, lively place.
Together with Cambridge, Oxford University is unlike most other universities in that it does not have a campus. It consists of a number of individual colleges which are scattered in and around the city. As a general rule, the older the college, the nearer it is to the city centre. These colleges are an integral part of Oxford and bookshops, pubs, restaurants, shops etc have grown up nearby over the years.

Oxford, St Giles Fair
St Giles Fair is held in Oxford every year at the beginning of September. As is the case with several towns in England - amongst them Stratford-upon-Avon and Warwick - many of the city centre streets are closed off for the duration of the fair. Visitors can enjoy all the traditional fun fair rides and amusements such as a coconut shy, helter skelter, carousels, dodgems and waltzers, as well some exciting up-to-date, white-knuckle rides.

Three Famous Oxford Pubs

(1) The Lamb and Flag. This pub is on St Giles, just to the north of St John's College who own and run it. Thomas Hardy is thought to have written much of "Jude the Obscure" in this pub which has often featured in the TV Detective drama "Inspector Morse".
(2) The Eagle and Child. My favourite pub in Oxford, this is bang opposite the Lamb and Flag on the opposite side of St Giles. There's a great atmosphere and they serve a good pint. JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis used to drink here. The pub has long had the nickname "Bird and Baby", and occasionally "Fowl and Foetus".
(3) The White Horse. Another tiny pub, on Broad Street, opposite the Sheldonian Theatre. Excellent beer and food, and a great atmosphere. Takes you back 100 years !!
We don't have a postcards of any of these pubs, just one of St Giles !
