The City of Brotherly Love in Old Postcards

Philadelphia, the "City of Brotherly Love", is the largest city in Pennsylvania, lying on the Delaware about 100 miles south of New York. The city centre has many historical connections, whilst the museum area and University City are well worth a visit, as is the Italian Market in South Philly.

All our vintage postcards are between 50 and 110 years old. To see our Philadelphia collection, visit "Postcards of the Past" - there's a link just below.

William Penn's Statue

This 37 feet high statue is now sitting (or standing !) on the top of Philadelphia City Hall. Prior to it being taken up to the clock tower, in the 1890s, the statue was exhibited in the courtyard, where visitors could see it and take photographs of it - hence this postcard.

Mario Lanza

The tenor and film actor Mario Lanza (real name Alfred Arnold Cocozza) was born in Philadelphia in 1921, just a couple of blocks from the Institute and Museum which bear his name and which may be found at 712 Montrose Street. The Museum is well worth a visit - I know, I've been there - with lots of interesting exhibits and very knowledgeable staff.
