Prehistoric Stonehenge

I've enjoyed visiting Stonehenge ever since I was in my teens (and that's a long time ago !). My aunt and uncle, who lived quite near to the stones, used to take me when I went to stay with them, and when I passed my driving test I used to go often, just for a day out. I remember taking my father when he was in his sixties, and it was his first ever visit - he was thrilled. With an ever-increasing number of visitors, Stonehenge has lost some of its atmosphere, but go there on a snowy winter's afternoon as darkness begins to fall and you will begin to feel the magic of the place.

No date for this postcard - however, the stones appear to be rather more higgledy-piggledy than they are now so perhaps some restoration work was carried out at some stage.

The Hele Stone, or Friar's Heel

The Hele Stone, Stonehenge

The Hele Stone, or Friar's Heel, is a single, 35 ton Sarsen Stone, standing to the north-east of the main stone circles. If one stands in the middle of the stones and faces the heel stone at the summer solstice, then the sun will appear to rise from behind it. There are numerous explanations for its name.
