Old Postcards of Wildwood, New Jersey

A few years ago I had the pleasure of spending a few, hot August days in Wildwood, which is a seaside resort on the Atlantic Coast of New Jersey. Like Atlantic City, it is famous for its boardwalk which runs along the seafront for about 2 miles and which is lined with a variety of shops and amusements as well as places to buy food, drink and all those edible items you would expect to find by the sea, including salt water taffy (this is a variety of toffee which does NOT contain any salt water !). There are also several piers with rides, including roller-coasters and places where you can sit in the sun or the shade and relax. The Atlantic Ocean is quite a walk from the boardwalk across a wide, sandy beach. There are various means of transport across the beach to the sea, and plenty of chairs and parasols for hire once you get there. The Atlantic breakers can be quite rough, but if you are a strong swimmer you will enjoy this, especially on a hot day - but watch out for jelly-fish and sharks. The life-guards keep their eyes open for the latter and you should get plenty of warning ! Wildwood used to have lots of motels which catered for its many visitors, particularly people from Philadelphia, but over the past few years many of these have been converted to condominiums and finding decent, reasonably-priced accommodation is becoming more difficult. There are, however, plenty of good bed and breakfast places.
So enjoy your stay - walk, or rent a bicycle and ride, along the boardwalk, swim in the sea, ride the roller-coaster, eat some candy-floss ("cotton candy" in American) and generally enjoy yourself !
