The Historic Barns of the Northwest, and some a little more modern
There is something so compelling about an old barn. The well worn wood, that has already seen a lifetime of activity. Though the houses are replaced, many old barns remain standing. Some are even still in use.
I suspect that many farmers and ranchers keep them for their history, and the memories of generations that lie within every grain of wood.
I'm sharing with you some of the photographs I have taken on trips through Idaho, Oregon and Washington. As well as some of the history and different types of barns.
Arched Roof Barns
What is an Arched Roof Barn?
Arched roofed barns have the strength of the arch, used for hundreds of years, and a wide open space inside. They are perfect for storing large pieces of machinery, and hay.

Gable Roofs
What are Gable roofs on barns
A gable is the generally triangular portion of a wall between the edges of a sloping roof. The shape of the gable and how it is detailed depends on the structural system being used (which is often related to climate and availability of materials) and aesthetic concerns. Thus the type of roof enclosing the volume dictates the shape of the gable.

Gambrel Roofs
What are Gambrel Roof Barns
A gambrel (also known as a Dutch gambrel) is a usually symmetrical two-sided roof with two slopes on each side. The upper slope is positioned at a shallow angle while the lower slope is quite steep. This design provides the advantages of a sloped roof while maximizing head space on the building's upper level. The name comes from the Medieval Latin word gamba meaning hoof, or leg of an animal.
The gambrel roof is associated with Colonial architecture, and particularly Dutch Colonial.
It is not uncommon for a gambrel roof to be referred to as a Mansard roof, although the more precise usage of the terms gambrel and Mansard is that a gambrel roof applies the two-slope idea to only two sides of the building (forming gables), whereas a Mansard roof applies the two-slope idea to all four sides of the building (forming hips). It is also not uncommon for laypeople not versed in architectural terms to refer to a gambrel roof as a barn roof (because gambrels are often mentally associated with barns).

Plaques & Markers
Many sites, once listed on the National Register, are denoted by bronze plaques. These plaques have a consistent look and feel nationwide. While DAHP does not fund the installation of plaques, we do provide information on where to obtain a plaque.

Bronze plaque
Many communities also have markers along the highway which denote the site of a Washington Heritage Register property or a National Register site. These are the infamous "brown signs" along state highways. DAHP does not regulate these signs. Requests to have a "brown" historic attraction sign installed in your community should be through the Regional office of State Department of Transportation (DOT).

- Those classic red barns, arched and gambrel roofed barns are so different from anything you'd see here in the UK, they seem quintessentially American (it's not every day you get a chance to say quintessentially!). Very charming and a part of living history, they are well worth preserving. Lovely photography and exploration of vintage barns in the Northwest USA.

- I love the old barns. The barn on my parent's farm was so old that it fell down. I hated to see it go.
Thanks for sharing.

- Thanks for sharing. I lived in Spokane for a couple years, and it was fun just driving through the farmlands out there. I once wrote about that barn with the wheel fence--that fence was quite the project that was built over years and years. :)
