Wonderful memories here. Make me miss my two dogs I've lost over the years, Ben and Humphrey. Thanks for sharing.

Very sweet story about your dogs, and a sad story about the Pitbull dog that was dumped, only a human can do that... Thank You for the proper loving burial.

Very touching and heart warming stories and pictures. I enjoyed reading this very much. I lived on a commune in the early 70s, and we didn't do drugs and carry on. We worked on farm full of farm animals and lived off the land. ~ Having a dog has bee a great experience for me, I have had many. I am looking forward to getting a dog again someday, but want to move into the country first. Its been too long, sometimes I imagine that I have a dog laying beside me as we rest after a long walk. That would be so nice to have to do with a loyal companion again.

This is so charming. I seen it in the sidebar of my old dog Cisco's lens and had to come for a peek. I'm glad I did. :)

I am sorry for your loss, the love for your dog is very strong throughout this and is very touching. Thank you for leaving a comment on my lens - you said you wouldn't trust anyone who hates dogs and I can see why you say that now after reading this. Some of these stories are heart breaking. Whilst I am not a dog lover, I wouldn't hurt one and I can't see why people would. I wrote my lens for a bit of fun, with no intention to offend - just to spark a healthy debate.

This lens is a wonderful tribute to your dogs.

Hello again, dear LKW3--I wrote you a private note and will say publicly that you are a great sport to read this lens about the greatest dog / god of them all, Mukunda the Saint, since you say you hate dogs--and were awarded a LOTD, too!! (Congrats For That!!) So maybe you like dogs just a little more, now.

And now I understand how you might not respond so kindly after being bitten so many times.

    Blessings!!

We've adopted several older dogs over the past several years. Their time with us is sometimes short, but they are wonderful companions with rarely any behavior problems and only require place to be comfortable, cared for and loved for the remaining years of their life. We currently have one old dog, Tyson, who is about 13 years old. he is featured in some of my lenses.

Awwww! Muki and my Sheba girl are TWINS, Kate! Really look a LOT alike, all the way to the white nuzzle. There are dogs and then there are golden dogs :-) My Sheba girl is now 13 and slowing down considerably, my constant companion angel canine best friend ever, really more important to me than most humans, maybe all humans.

I love this lens. Great caption pics and cute dogs. Several dogs have passed under my hands, four to be exact and I've lost them in the process. Maybe I'll write a lens about it. One of them just disappeared and the others died either prematurely or some other reason. Hmm..bringing up old memories. 5**

I miss my Old English Sheepdog, Tobie, who passed over "Rainbow Bridge" in Nov. 2007, having died only 7 years old under suspicious circumstances. She was a big lovable dog who wanted to be a lap dog. A book everyone should read is called, "Psychic Pets". It's just incredible, and I'll be making a lens on it soon.

All my old dogs have gone ahead, across the Rainbow Bridge. One old dog that has my heart is actually my brother's dog, and she is remarkable in her longevity. Part Rottweiller, part black Lab, Digger looks ferocious but has only love in her heart. She's now more than 15 years old, mostly deaf, and rather grey, but she still walks on her own and has time to school a new younger family member - a year old mixed breed Lab like herself. She's taught that pup to be calm, to mind her manners and to stay close to the people in her life as well as to stay near by the "old lady" and wait for her share of chow. Digger was the Best Dog at my brother's wedding a few years ago, and she was a happy lady that day. You can see a picture of her on that day at this URL: http://www.imagefactorygraphics.com/showcase/photos/ring-bearer.jpg

Beautiful lens and wonderful healing ... peace to you.

Ah, this is something that my sisters would appreciate as they have had plenty of old dogs throughout the years. One of my sisters has 4-5 dogs and 8 cats. Another sister just has one dog these days, but once raised Russian borzois!

    Hi Kate,
Congrats on the recognition that this lens (lenses) received. I have an old dog, too - Dory - who is an awesome role model for old age! Every day she impresses me with her spirit and energy for life and fun. She leaps around and runs with the youngest and has no care for others' attitudes towards her. She has taken 6 mile hikes with me at the end of her chain (she has to be on a leash so that she will not escape and get lost in her pursuit of a skunk or squirrel) and never tires, it seems. She is always up for another adventure. Great youtubes on dog massage!

What a beautiful tribute to man's/women's best friend! We have had many pets in the past and though we loved and cared for all of them, I can truly say I loved our dogs the most. We have 3 dogs right now rescued from situations not "fit for a dog." I hope you will come to see them at my LaraineRose lens. (lensrolled to this lens) 5*s, fan and happy to favor.

  • sittonbull Mar 1, 2009 @ 11:16 pm | delete
Well Kate, I'm glad I wandered over here to find your lens entered in this contest! The cruel irony that plays out in this life sometimes is the senseless loss of what and who we love so much. My pet losses have been through natural attrition and accidents... yours I can not imagine! I've always been taught to be very suspect of anyone who was cruel to animals... and that has proved to be an accurate rule. I've always had dog friends and always loved them! You've met Gus who knows all my faults and secrets, yet still loves me unconditionally! You've expressed so eloquently what your two old friends mean to you in this lens and given some excellent tips on elder canine care! Gus and I give you a "thumbs up" vote in your contest, and 5 bright stars and a favorite as well!

What beautiful stories!! We lost our last two dogs in 1994. Buffy St. Marie was our Bichon who died of kidney failure young. BJ a mixed breed dog with fire in her heart. My husband never recovered so we switched to cats, but remain dog lovers to the core. Five and faves to you.

Hi, Mooie. When I was growing up there was always a dog in the family. When we first moved to the Yukon, we had a boxer who, unfortunately, never got to be old. She was taken by wolves our second winter there. We were then given a lazy sled dog, named Barny. He was born old I think. He was a goofy old thing, who had earned his groceries for life, in saving me from a long plunge down a cliffside, when I was still in diapers. So my dad told me.

    [in reply to D.D. Delaney]

Our grief upon losing these dear companion souls knows no bounds.

After losing the dogs, I waited 28 years to get the dogs pictured here on this lens.

Yet it was worth the wait because I learned to love again, due to their undying devotion.

    Thanks for writing, Delaney.

I think we are better people because of the experience!!

What memories! I was on that commune you speak of and remember well the day we hitchhiked back from town to learn that the leader of our pack had been shot dead by John Barley's tenant farmer. I remember walking over the hill and down into the hollow where the son of a bitch lived. Blinded by my own tears, I intended to break his neck with my own bare hands. (I was of course unarmed.) He was standing down there with his rifle, waiting for me, when five or six police officers swarmed out of his house to come between us. I could barely speak, I was so torn up by grief, but I made my feelings known, and I remember how one officer looked at me with great sympathy and even a touch of sorrow, like he was sorry for the part he played in the killing. But it didn't do any of us much good, and of course, surrounded by police as if I were the criminal, I had little choice but to turn around and come home. The other dogs you speak of soon followed Das, disappearing over a period of a few days.

My old dog has now sadly moved on to fresh pastures. He was one of the family and when my son was young he would trundle upstairs with him and Toby (our dog) would lie there until our son was asleep. Once 'his job' was done he would return downstairs to his basket.

    Happy days.

    Lovely 5* lens

    Mike.

Kate, so touching! I have several dogs and have lost two in the last three years... they lived to a great age and I am a better person because of them. I now have two older dogs - 12 and 13 years old and they spend their time sleeping in the sun and reminding me there is more to life....

    Excellent work - 5 stars!

Wow, what a story (about the commune and the horrible thing done to the dogs). I can totally relate to this lens. It's beautiful, really. I have an almost 11-year old dog named Sassafrass Tea (Sassy) that I think I almost love too much, if that's possible (though I don't think there is such a thing). She really is my kid. And she has the best sense of humor. Anyone who says dogs don't have a funny bone is ... well, silly. Sure they do! Anyhow, once I put together my lens, "The Story of Sassafrass Tea," I'll definitely be back to lensroll this. For now, 5*, a favorite and a new fan. Thanks!

Love it! I don't have an old dog yet - he's still just a puppy. I've only just recently become a dog owner - I always had cats growing up. You know how there's "dog people" and "cat people", I still love cats but I think that I've become a "dog person" - yup, I'm a convert! My little doggie is so loving and affectionate - I can't help but be a fan!
