Older Adults need proper nutrition

Why do older adults need proper nutrition?
Unfortunately due to changes that occur as we age, how we take care of our body is vitally important. Exercise, including strength training should be considered a pillar of our staying healthy plan. Staying happy and staying clear of depression is as vital as nutrition and exercise. But what we eat is at the center of staying healthy and living a long and good life.
Different nutritional needs as you grow older
But that isn't to say that they should stop eating which is unfortunately something that happens to older folks. Eating regular meals that are healthy and nutritious are the key.
(It doesn't hurt that the food tastes good too)
Why don't older adults eat properly?
- food too hard to chew - older adults may avoid hard food like fruits and vegetables. this may cause them to miss out on important nutrients. Try to find substitutes for hard foods like canned fruits or fruit juices. Vegetables can be creamed or mashed.
- certain foods make your stomach hurt - some foods may cause you to have a upset stomach. Once again you need to find alternatives so you won't be missing out on important nutrients.
- not hungry - check with your doctor to see you are having a reaction to a medicine that you are taking. Skipping meals is not recommended.
- eat too much fast food - this is a problem for a lot of people because it is easier to stop and get a hamburger then it is to cook something nutritious. Fast foods for the most part don't have what you need and they have way too much of stuff that you don't need.
- dry mouth - dry mouth can be caused by medications or lack of saliva. To avoid this drink plenty of water and try to eat moistened food.
Are you having a problem chewing your food?
Add some spice!!
food may not taste as good because our taste buds change. Try to spice up your food (not salt!) olive oil, garlic and onions can help jazz up your meal

Have you considered being a vegetarian?
According to the Harvard Medical school vitamin B12 deficiency is one of the problems of folks who don't eat meat products. B12 can lead to atrophic gastritis, which thins the stomach lining. One way that older folks can prevent this deficiency is to take a multivitamin and a fortified breakfast.
