Boomin' Grown-Up Gals

Older women have a lot left in them that others might not like or want to see (tell them to use your bifocals).  Even though we might be on the UPhill of 40, we ain't DONE yet!  We age (BOO HISS), but we don't feel OLD.  That's for the over-80's group.

Our concerns cover the whole gambit...as a matter of fact, we worry about everything!  Work (I do it at home), family, beauty (or the lack of it), hobbies, kids (even though they're grown, they still need mom, right?), hubby, GRAVITY, health (get some good stuff here), fitness (who even has TIME to exercise?), style, decorating, cooking (more recipes coming!), what to wear, what NOT to wear, aging (HORRORS!), time management (heard of multi-tasking?  We're the best at it, you know), wrinkles, make-up, shopping, finances (check out what I do now), sex (we aren't 80...did I say we aren't 80?), just about anything that "other people" think about and worry over.  We aren't dead yet!  Who says that over 40 is old, anyway?

The whole point here is to share some tips about being older and wiser while getting GREATER!  Check out my blog for some ideas that are there already.  It's all about the UPhill part of life being OVER 40!  Whatever pops in the brainosphere may find its way here...hang on, it's a great ride!

Feeling OLD?

It ain't OVER yet!

Well, we all know we ain't 20-something, but does that mean that we have to be old?
Nope. We can stay young and active until we really ARE old...and past that, too! I think working from home and staying active (in mind and body) lead to a younger me! Keeping mind and body going strong, having a purpose in life, paying attention to the spiritual, and genuinely helping others leads to growing younger every year.
I found some of these ideas on "thinking young" at A Health Cafe. Click on their "Health Tips" section. There's some good reminders there. Actually, the Newsletter is better. You can sign up for it on the site.

Everyday "Special" Ravioli

2 cans Ravioli (Chef Boyardee or any brand, even generic)
1 cup (at least) shredded cheese (use anything you got!)
1 lb. ground beef (I suppose turkey or some veggie burger stuff would work, but...)
1/2 onion, diced

Spray the casserole dish. I use about a 2 qt. pan or dish. Brown the beef and throw in the onion and saute until the onion is soft. Put a layer of ravioli straight from the can in the casserole, then a layer of beef mixture, then a layer of cheese. Continue layering, ending with cheese last. Bake at 350 for about 30 minutes, or until everything is bubbly. For company, here's a really good recipe that just about like the one above:

Better Special Ravioli

Instead of the canned ravioli, use the fresh stuff from the grocer's refrigerator. I used 4-cheese and another package of chicken and basil for a church supper that everyone RAVED about.
For the sauce, use a jar of your favorite Italian-type sauce (I like Ragu Extra Chunky with mushrooms, but that's up to you...there's better ones, but I can't think of the brand).
Instead of any-old kind of cheese, use mozzarella.
Instead of ground beef, use ground sirloin?
Can't think of anything better than a diced onion, but hey, maybe Vidalia?
Cook the ravioli, brown the beef, add the onion, layer the casserole. Maybe use a better dish, too.
Don't worry...they will love it!

Parenting Parents

...or has the role reversal created havoc?

We've been raised (pretty well, huh?) and raised our own (pretty much), but now, we have to raise the raisers? Does this cause anyone grief, not to mention GUILT in life?
I have a whole lotta experiences to share and the latest is that my parents will soon be moving in with me. You have to realize...Dad is 96 (this May) and Mom is 88 (also this May). They're actually old enough to be my GRANDparents. SO...lots of new fun to add to life.
And, to add to our home! We're building on a new wing to accomodate them. Well, actually, we're building on a new wing to accomodate US! New Master Suite, bath, my new office, a workroom for the hubby and a powder room. LOTS of new space...new challenges, too. But, hey...THEY never promised ME a rose garden, so we are going to make the best of it.
Better for two people that raised me right to be raised by their only baby than by someone that really doesn't care, right? Better than running over there everyday, cooking their meals, checking on Mom's "depends" and other interesting trials. Just lots of new ones in store, I am certain.
If you've had any experience, or advice, let me know.

Do you Remember?

Or...WHAT do you remember?

Do you remember the "Woodstock Years"? I remember them well...along with moratoriums (at school), Kent State, Nam, friends being drafted (I was in the late group of boomers, so no deferments allowed), sit-ins, beehive hair, Martin Luther King marches, Jesus sandals, The Who, Doors, Jimi Hendrix, Moody Blues, Inagadadaveda, Tommy James and the Shondells, poet shirts, Mary Janes and gogo boots, Pet Rocks, Lone Ranger, Lion Sleeps Tonight, board-straight hair, headbands, oxfords, froot loops (and the ever-present desire to have the best one from the best guy), PEACE baby, jumping ahead...LEISURE SUITS (LOL), the Partridge Family and Brady Bunch, among a bazillion other things that I will have to remember! Help me add some more! Check out the pic...it's an actual page from the 1971 Sears catalog!
Who would have ever thought that a great many of us now want to work at home, rather than be in the poorhouse OR the rat race, giving up our power lunches in favor of sticking with the family, raise happy, healthy kids (not to mention grandkids), and would be called Grammy?

I JUST GOTTA ASK...

Do YOUR feet hurt?

Have you had any problems with your FEET? Is this something that we are just forced to have because we're older or wearing bad footwear or what? Do you have bunions caused by your shoes? How about calluses or nerve/toe damage?
I have found that my feet actually hurt more now than they used to! Anyone have the same problem? Is this part of getting older? What is causing this?
I found a few links that seem to point to our shoes as the culprit. This site mentions shoes quite a bit in the possible causes of all those bad feet out there.
Here's some tips on easing the pain:

Things You'll Need:

Hose or socks (especially if you're a all-season pants-wearer)
Gel insoles (Ahhh...relief!)
Adhesive foam pads (For the bunions and such)
Band-Aid Blister Block stick (Do YOUR heels rub?)
Corn sleeve (Eeeyeuuu...sounds like grandma)
