Our Old House
Our Queen Anne stick style house was built in 1880 for the William Kellogg family. Kellogg was a pharmacist and had a shop on Main Street. The house was designed and built by Archimedes Russell, a well-known architect from Central New York who designed many buildings in Syracuse and Ithaca. "The sunflower house" as it is known, is the only residential building designed by Russell that is still standing.
The name derives from Russell's use of the sunflower, a favorite design element of the 1880's, in carvings featured on the gables of the house, the side entry door, the main staircase, and even the weathervane. Many original features still exist including beautiful stained glass windows, parquet floors, fantastic woodwork, four fireplaces, and two indoor "inhouses" (as opposed to "outhouses").
About Us
As many owners of old houses (affectionately aka "money pits") discover, by the time the structural work often needed on these buildings is completed, decorating budgets have been eaten away by unexpected leaks, rot, infestation, and building code requirements.
Once the roof and foundation have been repaired, the walls re-plastered, the woodwork stripped and refinished, and the electrical wiring updated, many homeowners face not only limited resources but limited access to appropriate materials to decorate their home in a historically sensitive style.
Fortunately, we have access to decorator showrooms but it is time consuming and, even at wholesale prices, budget-breaking to find appropriate decorating choices for our clients' homes (ranging from 1700s saltboxes to 1950-60s tract houses) as well as for our own.
Looking for an alternative, we began building an international network of the finest designers and trade showrooms and vendors. In addition to our extensive selection of Interior Decorating Fabrics and Trims at Restoration Fabrics & Trims, we collected hundreds of first quality over-runs, discontinued and vintage wallpapers, one-of-a-kind affordable antiques, and new and vintage accessories so we could create the perfect exquisitely appointed, detailed interiors that old homes (and their owner- caretakers) demand - and at below-wholesale discount prices that do not skimp on anything except expense.
We now specialize in helping others create livable yet historically sensitive rooms that are appropriate to both the style and period of the home as well as the owners' lifestyles.
The postings you will find on our Squidoo lenses cover a wide range of topics from historical information on materials and period styles to an occasional rant or musings on just about anything related to Old Houses and a few of my other interests.
Feel free to ask questions and make suggestions. We will not be able to answer every question individually, but will try to focus on the issues raised in future lenses.
Thank you.
Chazz

I would love to live in an old house, but could never afford the upkeep.
RocklawnArts says:
I grew up in an old house and it was an amazing experience. The craftsmanship of newer houses just doesn't seem as good. They are warmer though. ;)
Newer more modern/contemporary homes are more my style.
