HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Old people should not drive !!

Take you life in your own hand I say, just get behind Ma and Pa kettle as they head off into the sunset. Speed limit just deduct 20 and your on it pops, looking for a park , grandad just cant get the car to manouver out as easily as it moved in. I'll just wait . Look out mums with babys, mum and dad crinkly wrinkly has just taken the last Mum with babys park. OH no they think its for handicaps only. I think I will change lanes OH now I will put on my indicator bit late that will let the younger folk out there know I am about to move over without looking. Well you under 50s Ma and me are off with the trailer If I had my glasses on I might be able to see you in the mirrors.

Statistics for the argument

USA institute of insurance

In 2006 older people (65 and older) made up 14.1 percent of all traffic fatalities, 13.5 percent of vehicle occupant fatalities and 18.9 percent of pedestrian fatalities, according to NHTSA.

In 2006, 81 percent of fatal accidents involving older drivers happened during the day. Seventy-two percent involved another vehicle.

In two-vehicle fatal crashes involving an older driver and a younger driver, older drivers' vehicles were nearly twice as likely to be struck than younger drivers' vehicles (61 percent versus 32 percent).

More fuel for the Debate!!

From Australia 2nd October 2011

THE debate about elderly drivers keeping their licences has been reignited after a tragic crash in a Gold Coast hospital carpark.

A woman, aged in her early 50s, was struck and killed as an elderly man parked his car at the John Flynn Private Hospital on Inland Drive, Tugun, on Friday afternoon.

John Flynn Private Hospital confirmed the name of the deceased woman as Deborah Whorley.

A clinical director at the hospital said Ms Whorley, aged in her 50s, was going to visit her elderly mother Betty who is a patient at John Flynn Private Hospital.

The accident comes after other serious crashes involving elderly drivers earlier this year, including a 79-year-old woman who struck and killed her friend while reversing her car after Bible study at the Taringa Baptist Church on Brisbane's westside in July.

Death sparks elderly licence debate
Carpark tragedy followed Bible studies
MP's daughter pinned by car, loses leg

That came just months after the daughter of Southport MP Peter Lawlor, Alison France, 38, lost her leg when she was struck by an 88-year-old driver in a shopping centre carpark.

In the latest incident, the 73-year-old Burleigh Heads man, who was dropping a family member at the emergency department, lost control of his car as he tried to park.

Ms Whorley was walking in the hospital's multi-level carpark when the man's runaway car crashed over a kerb and knocked her over a steel fence, about 4.40pm.

Ms Whorley, who lived in northern NSW, sustained serious injuries from the collision and fall and was taken to Gold Coast Hospital, where she later died.

Emergency and intensive care staff at the private hospital assisted the woman until an ambulance arrived.

The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating the incident.

Over 74? Then it becomes dangerous !

Recent study at leading University shows..

Older drivers (aged over 64) were involved in
relatively few crashes compared with younger drivers (aged under 65), and also had lower
crash rates than younger drivers after adjusting for differences between the specified age
groups in terms of population, and the number of licence holders. After adjusting for
differences in the amount of driving done by each of the age groups, it was found that crash
rates were reasonably constant for those aged between 25 and 74. Higher crash rates were
found only for those drivers under the age of 25 and over the age of 74. When crash rates
per licensed driver were analysed in terms of crash injury severity, it was found that older
drivers were over-represented in crashes resulting in fatal injuries.

86 year old in Horror smash

Woman maimed , heres part of the story

86 yo driver causes accidentA judge has called for checks on elderly drivers after an infirm 86-year-old man ploughed into three pedestrians, maiming one and contributing to the death of another.
Allan Skoyles was registered deaf, had undergone eight heart operations and had suffered a stroke which left him barely mobile, but was still allowed to drive.
He was pulling up in his Ford Focus outside a church in Gorleston, Norfolk, when he accidentally pressed the accelerator instead of the brake.
The car mounted the pavement and hit an elderly couple, Joyce and Arthur Willett, and Emma Woolnough, 24.
Miss Woolnough had a leg amputated, while Mr Willett, 78, died three months later.
His family believe the crash in February led to the deterioration in his health. His 77-year-old wife remains in hospital with serious hip injuries.

Yes, you're right!

Spoof says:

Old people are crazy! They think they can do wht they want because they are considered "elders". Well I've got news for them..there's this thing called laws..

Abbie says:

OLD PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE TO TAKE ANOTHER DRIVING TEST! IF THEY FAIL THERE OFF THE ROAD! FOR GOOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sm says:

A 66 year old man hit me today as i was STATIONARY at a stop sign and he was hard of hearing, so he obviously didn't hear me honking as his stupid ass reverse into me. OLD PEOPLE WHO CAN'T HEAR/SEE SHOULD NOT BE ALOUD TO DRIVE

raosrinivas says:

yes I do agree, old people should not drive, My meaning of old is who ever not physically or mentally healthy.

TAF says:

I just had one reverse into my car the other day :@

Hutchisom says:

old people are more susceptible to developing cataracts, this is highly detrimental towards vision and therefore driving.

din says:

I think that old people should be allowed to drive, beacuse they are my elders, and nobdy has a right to tell them not to drive. But at the same time, they are a danger to themselves and other drivers.

Vitamoney says:

old driver will not give problems if they are confident while driving as long as they are able to see, hear and have a valid driving license. If not, you can drive as long as they still have a lot of money to pay the summons.

amy says:

got a brand new car, had it for two weeks and an old person crashed into me. they shouldnt be allowed to drive untill they have done a re-test.

Sarah says:

Old people are a liability to life on the roads! Just as canabis is, and it is abolished so should old people driving!

mohammad says:

they can but they should not

Scampii says:

Yea, i dont think elderly people shud drive as they have poor eyesite and bad reaction time, this means they r more likely to cause an accident.

No way, Monkeybrain!

VicDoke says:

Your arguments are valid but you can't just generalize for everyone of a certain age.

I see an old friend of mine in the gym 3 mornings a week. He drives and is in better shape than some 25 years his junior. His chronological age is 92. His functional age is more like 67.

If we are to be rational, we should also scrutinize the very young, who lack practical experience and much needed skills -who are often guilty of some really goofy stuff behind the wheel.

We should also look at anyone who dare talk on the phone or text.

And how about those out-of-control mothers with out-of-control kids that she is trying to swat at in the back seat while driving, while applying makeup, while drinking coffee and munching a box of donut hole?

How about them?

dad says:

old people don't talk on cell phones. And don't drink and drive.

Mike F says:

In all reality it boils down to how well they can drive. My grand fathers and grand monther still drive in thier mid 70's I know that is not too old. but fo rthe last 20 years my grand mother refuses to drive at knight because she believes she is not a save driver at night.

As long as the individuals are responsible enough to know where thier limits are then it works. unfortunatly some people do knot know thier limits so the states have to step in..

there was another good write up on this toppic on another site.

Im not sure if im linking thier page correctly umm it is here. http://war-vets.org/hanging-up-the-car-keys-for-good

helen says:

I think that old people should have to take a test when they turn 60 or 65 to see if they are Mentally healthey if they pass then they should be allowed to drive still. This is becasue everyone is differnt and they should be juged by there age!

ShirlW says:

I think those over a certain age should be able to drive, once they pass a test that determines they are a safe driver. I also believe the test should be given more and more frequently as we age. For every person who believe older people shouldn't drive, please remember YOU will be one of those people one day.

ruttti says:

There should be a distinction between ability to drive and age. Some old people can still manage to drive better than younger ones. they are more responsible sometimes. Run a series of driving skill test and that's it.

Rutttti
transmission problem

TWOnline2 says:

the age is not the problem, it is other facters. for example, i personally know young people who have gotten into horrible accidents going both fast and slow. i personally know of a young lady who managed to kill her passengers by not paying attention to the street signs. i have seen older people drive at all ages without problems. so if you want to make a rule, stop the young and the old from driving but also remove the licenses of drinkers, druggers, road raggers, gangsters, people prone to heart attacks and strokes, etc. the list goes on. if you want to remove drivers from the road because of physical conditions, then you are left with less drivers and possibly less accidents. well, that is not going to happen and neither is the removal of licenses for the elderly.

Georgia says:

Old people should Firstly take another driving test to see if they are up to the legal requirements given.

Mellie says:

well i say yes and no. yes because some elderly can be like what you had and no because as long as you have a lisece, its legal. I agree with 'the dude

Bob says:

no i dont think that old people should be able to drive or get retested fot there licience. My mom was hit by an old women.

The Dude says:

Well I suppose some elderly people are still able to drive just fine but maybe above a specific age you should have to be tested every six months or so that is designed just for the elderly?

launa says:

they should beccase it is an injustice and it is easier for them to ge aroung and it also saves them stress and energy , because older people get tired easier then younger people.
