Old Time Radio

Ranked #64,517 in Entertainment, #893,938 overall

Old Time Radio refers to the nightly or weekly radio broadcasts that entertained America from the 1930s through the early 1950s.

Starting in the early 1930s, radio stations around the country began to develop nightly and weekly shows featuring comedy, music and storytelling.  Economics quickly called for cost sharing and first regional then nation wide networks of stations formed.

Audiences quickly formed around these new broadcasts and America found a new form of entertainment. One that would unite the country on a nightly and weekly basis.  From the Vaudeville ranks came many actors and writers who became stars over the airwaves.

Eventually replaced by television, the old time radio (otr) shows created the foundation for the televsion networks and the standard entertainment formats that we still have today.
