The Golden Age of Radio "THE SIX SHOOTER"

The intention of this lens and others I propose is to bring awareness to the almost forgotten media of American theatrical radio. To bring something old and new, in this technological age, to those who pass by and take the opportunity to listen to a media that has seen better days in the United States. The Old Time Radio Flier intends to show the quality, quantity and variety of programes produced during the very short period known as "The Golden Age Of Radio". To give an understanding of the history of what is known today as "Old Time Radio."

THE SIX SHOOTER

Introduction

THE SIX SHOOTER is a western drama that started on September 20, 1953. JAMES STEWART played BRETT PONSET "the Texas plainsman who wondered through the western territories, leaving behind a trail of still remembered legends." The show made its appearance well pass American radio's best years, however, the show was an UNUSUAL and FETCHING western. The hero, Britt Ponset, was a slow talking, easy going gentleman, but dangerous when pushed into a gunfight.

The epigraph set up the show:

The man in the saddle is angular and long-legged...his skin is sun-dyed brown...the gun in his holster is gray steel and rainbow mother-of-pearl, its handle unmarked. people call them both "the Six Shooter."

James Stewart was perfect as the maverick who stumbled into other peoples problems. He played Hamlet with a road company, ran for mayor and sheriff of the same town at the same time, and became involved in a western version of Cinderella. At Christmas he told a young runaway the story of A Christmas Carol, substituting Dickens characters for western ones.

Jimmy Stewart was a superb radio actor. His narration-in-whisper of one particular climax "The Silver Belt Buckle" was a gripping climax of the truth. The series as a whole just lacked the fine edge to be found in what many consider to be radio's two best westerns "Gunsmoke" and "Frontier Gentleman."
