THE GOLDEN AGE OF RADIO "THE WHISTLER"
The intention of this lens and others I propose is to bring awareness to the almost forgotten media of American theatrical radio. To bring something old and new, in this technological age, to those who pass by and take the opportunity to listen to a media that has seen better days in the United States. The Old Time Radio Flier intends to show the quality, quantity and variety of programmes produced during the very short period known as "The Golden Age Of Radio". To give an understanding of the history of what is known today as "Old Time Radio".

THE WHISTLER
Introduction
THE WHISTLER radio series was a crime anthology melodrama. Broadcast for the first time on May 16, 1942, on CBS and strictly on the West Coast. The sponsor SIGNAL OIL was available only in the western U. S. Only two attempts were made to split the show with separate sponsorship on the East Coast, July 3 to September 25, 1946 CBS broadcast with Campbell Soup as the sponsor, and March 26, 1947 to September 1948 CBS broadcast with the sponsorship of Household Finance. Throughout these times SIGNAL OIL continued West Coast sponsorship.
The show revolved around "THE WHISTLER" a mysterious teller of MURDER STORIES. "THE WHISTLER" was on most occasions played by Bill Forman. Although on occasion another actor would take over the role, while Forman was in the army for instance Marvin Miller played the part, and in the 1948 season Bill Johnstone was THE WHISTLER. Everett Clarke played the part in 1946-47 in the Chicago series,
The repertory company of actors came straight from HOLLYWOOD'S RADIO ROW, and become known as THE WHISTLER'S CHILDREN. The company included Cathy and Elliott Lewis, Joseph Kearns, Betty Lou Gerson, Wally Maher, John Brown, Hans Conreid, Gerald Mohr, Lurene Tutle, Donald Woods, Gloria Blondell, John McIntire, Jeanette Nolan, Frank Lovejoy, Jeff Chandler, Joan Banks, Mercedes McCambridge. In other words most of the cast members from the radio series SUSPENSE.
Wilbur Hatch did the mood music and composed the theme music, the whistle itself was done by Dorothy Roberts, who weekly for 13 years, whistled the 37 notes, 13 at the beginning and 11 leading into the story, 13 at the end. Hatch estimated that only one person in twenty could whistle the exact melody.
Despite its regional status THE WHISTLER was one of the BEST KNOWN crime dramas and one of the LONGEST RUNNING. The signature ranks with radio's greatest, playing perfectly into the host's man of mystery role. Just like the SHADOW and THE MYSTERIOUS TRAVELER, THE WHISTLER was a voice of fate, baiting the guilty with his smiling malevolence.

I'm amazed at how many episodes they did! It's going to take a while to listen to all of these. I love the little bits of history which each show will contain in some fashion or another...
I did think it was funny in the first show how the jury found the defendant "guilty of murder due to the lack of more complete evidence". LOL, that was funny. Early radio justice!
Thank you for introducing me to this series. It was completely new to me.

- What an incredible classic, you certainly have a passion for OTR, I really love your preservation of such wonderful entertainment. I hope you have all of these backed up 3-fold, it would be a terrible shame if anything ever happened to such a marvelous collection.
