All about Spices
Hello and welcome to my spice shop! Did you know that in the story of Genesis, Joseph was sold into slavery by his brothers to spice merchants? And Solomon compared his beloved to many different forms of spices!
Vasco da Gama sailed to India in 1499 because he was tired of other men controlling the trade routes. Spain and Portugal were not happy at all having to pay the high price that Venice demanded for spices.
Around that same time is when Christopher Columbus came back telling everyone about all of the spices that he had found here in the New World.
He found that there were a lot of different spices here, like allspice, bell peppers, chili peppers, vanilla and that greatest of flavorings, chocolate!
That made for a very good trade market because back in those days, people didn't know that you could transplant from area to area. They thought you could only grow certain things in certain places!
Granny B comes in quite often, as does Percival when he's working on new potions. I've had to ship some packages of spices to people who are traveling through too. The stagecoach driver loves when I ship cinnamon. He says it makes him yearn for pies! Miss Bessie comes in for Frenchy Bean and uses it as perfume! Make sure you stop by and say hello to them!

CINNAMON BARK
Cinnamon bark is widely used as a spice. It is principally employed in cookery as a condiment and flavoring material. It's used in the preparation of chocolate, especially in Mexico, which is the main importer of true cinnamon. Did you know cinnamon is mentioned in the Bible? Cinnamon has been known from remote antiquity; the first mention of a particular spice in the Old Testament is of cinnamon (Exodus 30. 24) where Moses is commanded to use both sweet cinnamon (Hebrew qinnamôn) and cassia in the holy anointing oil; in Proverbs 7:17-18, where the lover's bed is perfumed with myrrh, aloe and cinnamon; and in Song of Solomon 4:14, a song describing the beauty of his beloved, cinnamon scents her garments like the smell of Lebanon. It was so highly prized among ancient nations that it was regarded as a gift fit for monarchs and even for a god: a fine inscription records the gift of cinnamon and cassia to the temple of Apollo at Miletus.

FRENCHY BEAN
The first to cultivate vanilla were the Totonac people, who inhabit the Mazantla Valley on the Gulf Coast of Mexico in the present-day state of Veracruz. According to Totonac mythology, the tropical orchid was born when Princess Xanat, forbidden by her father from marrying a mortal, fled to the forest with her lover. The lovers were captured and beheaded. Where their blood touched the ground, the vine of the tropical orchid grew..more here

THE VANILLA
Vanilla planifolia is a species of vanilla orchid. It is native to Mexico, and is one of the primary sources for vanilla flavouring, due to its high vanillin content. Often, it is simply referred to as "the vanilla". It was first scientifically named in 1808.
