Olivier Follmi Photography of the Himalaya -- Discover A Hidden World

The Secret World of the Himalaya and Beyond Captured by Photographer Olivier Föllmi
How to describe the travel photography of Olivier Follmi in the Himalaya region and beyond? These photographic portraits of people captured about their everyday life express so much. Deeply personal and intimate, they show a devotion that is rooted in quiet contemplation. Follmi's portraits of children and infants, on the other hand, reveal the swiftly changing moods of childhood: wonder, exuberance, anxiety.
Olivier Föllmi's photography is a tribute to the Indian region of Ladakh (which some call 'Little Tibet') and its people. His work and Tibetan Buddhism meet in perfect harmony as he presents us with beautifully composed glimpses of a land which he clearly loves with a passion.

Föllmi in Ladakh, Himalaya
Graines de Vie
Bright-Eyed Infants by Olivier Föllmi
The literal translation of Olivier Föllmi's Graines de Vie is 'seeds of life', a title he gives to a triple portrait of tiny children swaddled up against the cold in hats and warm, colorful fabrics and animal skins. In the bright alertness of their gaze we see their resilience to the inhospitable environment. Like seeds they will be nurtured and will grow.
Intention
by Olivier Föllmi

Olivier Föllmi's Intention is a beautiful portrait that, just for a moment, invites us into the world of the subject.
The candle cradled between hands reflects its golden light in the young woman's eyes, illuminating the serious look there and isolating this earnest figure from the surrounding darkness.

Moine (Monk)
Portrait of a monk

It is a soft golden daylight rather than candlelight that illuminates the face of this monk in another photographic portrait by Olivier Föllmi. Simply titled Moine it captures a personal moment of contemplation.
As with his previous subject, Föllmi's monk is caught by ambient light and surrounded by darkness. Perhaps the message (or one of them) held in these portraits is that Faith can enlighten its subject, but that it is a personal enlightenment that is experienced only by the believer?

Mains (Hands)
The eloquence of hands
This triple portrait of hands by Olivier Föllmi, titled simply Mains, shows that we do not always need to see the face to learn something about the subject.
So it is that in Föllmi's photograph on the left we feel the intensity and the calm of the young monk's meditative pose, sitting wtih one hand resting on the other.
In the central photo a child's small hand reaches out to the gnarled and weathered hand of an elder, perhaps a grandparent, whose fingers are telling a string of wooden prayer beads as their owner prays.
And, on the right, Föllmi has created a picture of a whole circle of hands, some wearing rings, some covered in dust or perhaps clay, and each protruding from a deep red robe.
Joie
Portrait of a child by Olivier Föllmi
In Joie, or Joy, Olivier Föllmi shares with us a moment in a child's play where the little girl is lit both by sunlight and by a small smile. Against her face she holds a rope of knitted wool, and brightly colored fibers caught up in the breeze float in the air.
What a magical portrait Föllmi has created from this passing moment.
Playtime at Sumdo School
Children in Ladakh
Olivier Föllmi brings us here an exuberant moment as children revel in their mountain environment in Playtime at Sumdo School, Ladakh.
Fearless (and as careless of their school clothes as children everywhere!) they lean over a wall, abandoning fabric school bags and slates on the dusty ground. In the distance are the peaks of the mighty Himalaya, a familiar backdrop for these little scholars in Ladakh.
Parmi le Precieux Tissages
Follmi photographs a child peeping through woven rugs
In Parmi le Precieux Tissages another precious childhood moment is captured by Olivier Föllmi.
A small child peeks out from between the brightly colored woven rugs with their intricate designs. She wears a bead necklace, long dress, and a worried expression on her face.
Air Bubbles in the Frozen River Zanskar
Oliver Föllmi in Himalaya
The Zanskar River, which eventually joins the Indus, freezes in winter and it is possible to walk across it in safety. It is even possible to take a trek of several days along the river. This is known as the Chadar Trek.
Air Bubbles in the Frozen River Zanskar demonstrates the beauty of the river as it is crossed by a local in sandals and with a stout stick.

Lac Blanc, Salé de Tso Kar
Salt Lake of Tso Kar
Here we see an aspect of the Ladakh landscape which is home to Olivier Föllmi's photographic subjects. Lac Blanc, Salé de Tso Kar shows the salt lake, Tso Kar, in Ladakh. Beyond are the peaks of the Himalaya mountain range.
Mountain Path
A Challenging Path with Quote from the Buddha
Although it is not clear whether Olivier Föllmi's Mountain Path photograph was taken in Ladakh, it does seem likely.
The quotation from the Buddha reads:
There is no way to happiness. Happiness is the way.
A Journey in Ladakh
Harvey's aim in visiting Ladakh in northern India was to experience a true Tibetan Buddhist society, something that has been near impossible since the occupation of Tibet. In his book he combines an account of his travels with more spiritual questions and discoveries that resulted from the time he spent in this deeply spiritual place.

- High Five! Traveling to the Himalayans is in my wish list. I would like to get to know the people there. Looking at Olivier Follmi's beautiful photographs I see what I've always dreamed of; spirituality at its best.
Inspiration is the image that I love the most, a woman in prayer, totally immersed in her meditation, the best way to focus in our inner soul to heal our spirit.

- Your subject: the Tibetan monk is, in my opinion your best work in that genre.it makes one wonder what was in his mind when the image was captured. I am glad I bought it in Schipol airport many years back, I treasure it like a Rembrandt !! Great work!
