Give a Laptop. Get a Laptop. Change the World.

In 2007 Americans bought 100,000 laptops for children across the world. This year, One Laptop Per Child hopes to give 1 million laptops to children in the least developed countries around the world for 2008.

Once again you can give a laptop and get a laptop in the innovative Give One Get One program. This year it is easier because the One Laptop per Child Foundation has paired up with Amazon.com to fulfill the orders.

We donated (from my Squidoo earnings) and made a difference last year and hope to do again this year.

Did we give him his Laptop?

Donating a Laptop in 2007

Last year as part of the Give One Get One program, we donate a laptop to a child in a developing country and got one for our daughters to share.

While they initially had wanted one for each of them, they eventually decided that it was pretty neat sending a laptop to a child in another country.

What we did last year really hit home as they watched the video stories of thanks from the children who have received laptops. As they watched the clips they asked, "Did we give him his Laptop?"

10 Reasons to Like the XO Laptop

Reasons why the XO Laptop is a fun way to introduce children to computers.
  1. It's child friendly and intuitive. Everything is scaled to fit a child, from the integrated handle to the sealed, rubberized keyboard.
  2. It's spillproof, rainproof and dustproof.
  3. It's also drop-proof.
  4. It's fanless so it's silent.
  5. It's light, weighing 3.2 pounds.
  6. It's long-lived. One battery charge will power six hours of heavy activity, or 24 hours of reading.
  7. It has a built-in video camera, microphone and memory-card slot, graphics tablet and game-pad controllers.
  8. It can easily configure from a standard laptop to an e-book reader and a hand-held video game player.
  9. It's relatively inexpensive - $200.
  10. It's a way of giving a computer to the educationally under-served children in poor countries.

Making a Difference in the Lives of Children

The mission of One Laptop per Child (OLPC) is to empower the children of developing countries to learn by providing one connected laptop to every school-age child.

By giving a laptop, you are helping bring education to children in some of the world's most remote areas.

You are connecting them to each other. To us. To hope. And to a better future.

One Laptop Per Child from Wikipedia

The XO-1, previously known as the $100 Laptop, 'Childrens Machine, and 2B1', is an inexpensive subnotebook computer intended to be distributed to children in developing countries around the world, to provide them with access to knowledge, and opportunities to "explore, experiment and express themselves" (constructionist learning). The laptop is developed by the One Laptop per Child (OLPC) non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization and manufactured by Quanta Computer.

The subnotebooks are designed for sale to government-education systems which then give each primary school child their own laptop. Pricing was set to start at $188 in 2006, with a stated goal to reach the $100 mark in 2008. In actual implementation, prices have remained $199 each for both the winter 2007 and winter 2008 Give One, Get One campaigns (and thus $398 per...

Learning from the XO Laptop

Both of my daughters aged 8 and 6 now have gotten a lot of use out of their XO laptop. Even better was that they figured out how to use the laptop on their own.

They have had a lot fun recording silly video clips (most of which will be embarrassing years from now). They have also had fun writing and typing stories.

For our girls, the XO laptop was one of the Christmas gifts that we got them last year that they have continued to use on a weekly basis.

Are they saying "Thank You" to us?

Thank You to the 2007 G1G1 Donors

Heartfelt Thank You's from grateful recipients.

I had my daughters watch this clip, knowing that we'd donated last year. I could tell that it made a big difference to them, I know watching them watching the videos had a bit impact on me.

About One Laptop Per Child

It's an education project, not a laptop project.

Professor Nicholas Negroponte

One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) is a non-profit organization founded by MIT Professor Nicholas Negroponte and a team of educators, developers and technologists dedicated to educating children in developing nations with the goal of eradicating poverty.

OLPC has developed the XO laptop, the first laptop ever created specifically for the purpose of educating children in developing countries. The XO is a children's machine, designed to tap into a child's innate capacities to learn, share and create. The rugged design and sealed casing make the XO the only laptop capable of being used in outdoor classrooms and in harsh environmental conditions, powered with human energy.

Why give a laptop to a child in the emerging world? If you replace the word "laptop" with "education" the answer becomes clear. You don't wait to educate until all other challenges are resolved. You educate at the same time because it's such an important part of all the other solutions.

I thought this was an amazing idea form the very first time I heard of it. I hope that O3B (the other 3 billion) project and this will seriously revolutionise the world. Laptop hardware costs are being driven down by this and the market here too. This is an amazing idea, and it is possible that other cool toys like the Eee PC would not have been possible without it.
