Who is Olympia Snowe?

Senator Olympia Snowe, The Independent Republican

As a little girl growing up in Iowa, I knew that while my mother was an equal partner with my father, women were not in government. Except for the woman who signed the money, and Senator Margaret Chase Smith. She replaced her husband, as many women did then, but in fact went on to have a long career in the Senate, usually as the only woman.

60 years later there are 17 women in the Senate, and none are more respected, in fact no Senator at all is more respected than Olympia Snowe. My shallow self just loves her name. But the publicity she has recently received as one of three Republican Senators who voted for President Obama's stimulus bill, has shown that she is a lot more than a name.

I have been most impressed to hear her talk about the Stimulus Bill. `All the carrying on, ranting and raving, and there she stands talking about this is a steady and clear voice, just making sense. This would be a Republican I could vote for, and certainly the only current Republican that I think could be President.

There is a lot to this woman. I decided to find out more about her and share it with you.

Three reasons to love Olympia Snowe

1. Olympia Snowe, the daughter of Greek immigrants, was orphaned at an early age, and spent several years in an orphanage. She was able to overcome difficult childhood conditions to go to college and have a long and illustrious political career in Maine and on the National stage.

2. Senator Snowe is a moderate Republican who is often responsible for helping mediate partisan politics, quietly moving people closer together by getting past petty bickering. She is a Republican that I could vote for for President.

3. The first woman to serve on the Senate Armed Forces Committee she writes: "As your U.S. Senator for Maine, I am committed to serving Maine's Veterans and their families. The recent revelations of the conditions at military hospitals and recuperation facilities that treat our wounded warriors have left Americans aghast. This is simply unacceptable and the level of care our nation's heroes are currently receiving must be addressed.

I want to hear the individual stories, the personal experiences that Maine veterans have to share - the successes, the failures, what works and what doesn't. That is why I am asking you to contact me directly and tell me your story.

3 States Have Two Women Senators In Washington, Do You Know Which Ones?

I knew one state had two women Senators, but when Barack Obama's stimulus bill was passed in the Senate three Republicans broke rank to vote for it. I learned that both of Maine's Senators were Republican and female.

Olympia Snow May Be Only GOP Senator to Vote for Health Care Reform
(Newser Summary) - As health care talks grow more polarized, Democrats are looking to Olympia Snowe as their most likely-and quite possibly only-Republican vote, the New York Times reports. "I certainly hope not!" exclaims Snowe when asked about the possibility. But the centrist Maine senator has long been engaged on health care issues, and believes deeply that reform is necessary.

Democrats have been negotiating with Snowe, Chuck Grassley and Michael Enzi, the Republicans on the Senate Finance Committee, but Grassley and Enzi seem increasingly at odds with Democrats' plans. Snowe supports many Democratic ideas, including some form of public insurance, and disdains partisan warfare. "It shouldn't be about winning and losing," she says. "If it comes down to all or nothing in this polarizing standoff, that does nothing to serve the interests of this country."

    I juat wanted to say, this woman has one of the coolest names I have ever heard of. I want to name my next kid Olympia. Sounds like power.
