It can be hard to figure out how many sporting events athletes will be competing in during the Olympic Games. First you need to know if you mean a sport, a discipline, or an event.

What is an event, a sport and a discipline at the Olympic Games?

Each sport may be divided into several disciplines. For example, Gymnastics is a sport that can be divided into the disciplines of Trampoline, Rythmic Gymnastics and Artistic Gymnastics. Each discipline will hold numerous events for both women and men. An event is a competition in which a medal is given.

So how many sports are going to be held at the 2012 Olympic Games in London?

According to the official London Olympics website there will be 26 sports and 39 disciplines. These will be broken down into over 300 events.

are the only four events to be held at every Modern Summer Olympic Games.

At the IOC meeting on July 7, 2005, baseball and softball were voted out of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London, England

Sporting Events that are no longer included in the Summer Olympic Games

  1. Baseball - Baseball was last played at the 2008 Olympics but has been voted out for both the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games
  2. Basque Pelota - Was only officially played in the 1900 Olympic Games and was a demonstration sport for the next few official games.
  3. Cricket - Cricket was an offical Olympic Sport only once in 1900.
  4. Croquet: In 1900 Croquet was played for the first and last time at the Olympic Games which were hosted in Paris. Only French players entered the sport, and only one ticket was sold.
  5. Golf - Golf was a sporting event at the 1900 and 1904 Olympics, and it will be brought back for the 2016 Olympic Games
  6. Jeu de Paume - Jeu de Paume was played once at the 1908 Olympics.
  7. Lacrosse - Lacrosse was played at the 1904 and 1908 Games in St Louis and London.
  8. Polo - Polo was an Olympic Sport five times.
  9. Racquets - Racquets was played once in 1908.
  10. Roque - Roque was played once in 1908
  11. Rugby - Rugy has been played at the Olympics four times, in 1900, 1908, 1920 and 1924. Ruby fans will be pleased to hear that Rugby will be included in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio.
  12. Softball - Softball has been played four times at the Olympics in 1996, 2000, 2004 and 2008.
  13. Tug of War - Perhaps the most bizarre of all sporting events. Tug of War was a team event for five Olympic Games.
  14. Water Motorsports - Water Motor sports was an event only once in the 1908 Summer Olympics.
