Beijing Olympics 2008
The Games of the XXIX Olympiad were held in Beijing August 8, 2008 with the opening ceremony taking place at 8 p.m. (08-08-08-08 - the number 8 is associated with prosperity in Chinese culture).
On 13 July 2001 at the 112th IOC Session in Moscow, Beijing was elected the Host City for the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008. The vote followed in line with the recommendation of the IOC Evaluation Commission that "a Beijing Games would leave a unique legacy to China and to sports. The Commission is confident that Beijing could organise an excellent Games".

- Medal Design
The medals are designed in the shape of river rocks like those found in the spectacular streams and rivers of Utah, and they embody the spirit of the American West - from the forging of the West to the technological present.
* Medal Front: An athlete emerges from a background of flame, rock or ice, symbolizing a mastery of the elements. The image of fire and the words "Light the Fire Within" celebrate the athlete's passion to compete and their ability to inspire greatness in us all. The Olympic Rings at the base of the medal and the Roman numeral XIX at the base of the ribbon loop complete the medal design.
* Medal Back: Nike, the Greek goddess of victory, is in full stride and holds a small victory leaf, symbolizing the olive wreaths presented to winners during ancient Olympic Games. Within Nike's embrace is an illustration of one of 16 different venues where the medal was won. In addition, each medal carries an engraving specific to one of 78 specific events. These features make these the most customized medals ever created. O.C. Tanner's revolutionary manufacturing process makes each victory medal slightly unique - like individual rocks sculpted by water and wind. Each is a piece of art.

It's pretty cool. The athletes are all real people. I like the boxer the best. Also, check out this link for an interview with the director Steve James: http://video.nbc5.com/player/?id=103447

Thanks for the massive compilation of all things Olympic! I just dropped my friends off for lunch at Benny's in Ann Arbor, and it was the busiest I've ever seen -- probably because it was mentioned in the media as Michael Phelps' breakfast restaurant while he was training. Just another example of the impact of the Olympics on everyone.

Congratulations on Lens of the Day!
Picking a favorite event is difficult. I wish that they would show all of the various sports on TV and broadcast the efforts of the athletes from all countries. It seems that in the past the emphasis was more international. Now it's all about the US teams.
I love the way you covered all aspects of the Olympic medals. You really know how to put a lens together.
