HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Does the world still need Olympics?

Nobody will seriously doubt the merits of sports competitions and global unity, nor do I want to criticize all dedicated athletes and their organizations. But I also see the negative impact on ecology and urban structures, super athletes on steroids sent by governments who decided not to boycott the hosting nation of opposing political views. And I see multi-billion dollar media spectacles in countries without civil rights, terrorists bombing their ideologies onto the rest of us, commercial greed and other controversial global developments accompanying The Games.

Abolish Olympics?

Loading Fetching blurbs now... please stand by

Yes, you're right!

silver says:

Olympics wastes money we should be using for world poverty and world hunger! It is also really bad for the environment.

Joey Atwater says:

Olympics have replaced religion. Its Gold before God
The US presidential election is no better with more than 300Million USD spend on promoting fools

Tiddledeewinks says:

Waste of money that could be used for the poor.

nezzy tha lezzy says:

they should bring hacky sack into the olympic games then i mite watch it. Its so boring otherwise.......gosh!!!

InfoRealtor says:

I used to enjoy watching the Olympics but that has changed. If they abolish the Olympics tomorrow I wouldn't cry a single tear.

FlorenceArt says:

I'm not a fan of Olympic games and the sports industry in general, but I like the fact that the Chinese government's attempt to use them as propaganda to improve their image is backfiring on them. Honestly, when was the last time Tibet made headline news?

Peter Reaper says:

China's human rights abuses are far more relevant than any overrated farcical hypocritical cash-cow Olympics. If the Olympic committee chooses China, then they are doing it for reasons other than "bringing the world together".

Not only should freedom-loving people boycott the Olympics, they should be boycotting Chinese products.

BTW: I find most events at the Olympics ... underwhelming.

bdkz says:

I think that the Olympics need a major overhaul!

The_Book_Garden says:

It's a difficult one, this event has turned very much from a cultural exchange to one of outrageous expense, both financial and ecological.

Squidster says:

I'd say, bring the Olympic Games permanently to Greece, or abolish them altogether.

No way, Monkeybrain!

papawu says:

Besides the other opinion I had, the Olympics have shown to have serious political and social significance over the years. Such as Jesse Owens over the Nazis and the 1980 U.S. hockey team over the Russians.

papawu says:

No way! I still find the Olympics to be exciting and exhilirating at times. I don't see anything wrong with a little world competition. They say competition is good for the soul you know.

spirituality says:

I liked that this years olympics wasn't just about sports - it was also about Tibet and the situation there... It puts a country in the spotlight for the whole world to see, they get to show what they're good at (didn't the Chinese do that well also?) and their opposition gets a word in as well.

The world needs to be unified and this is certainly one of the ways we will learn to think of the world as ONE place, where we've got to all work together.

PastorKay says:

I love the Olympics. However, I think they are a bit overdone. The money spent on the opening ceremony alone in China is insane.

halson says:

I wanna say, Olympics is not only good for the connection between different countries, also beneficial to promote the status of its International daily .
Oly is also as a hope for many fans who are crazy about it, at least, I am.
It is noble but always is connected with something ugly, such as polistic problems, even the conflicts of some warring countries.

bobgnote says:

You don't need to abolish what is nice, and it will FALL APART, when the time comes. The US and UK are super-crime scenes. Since the next games are in London, 2012, just leave Mayor Bloomberg on FACE THE NATION, like he is today, until the UK gets its due, possibly at the 2012 games. No softball will be there, so if something goes wrong, the rest of the Olympic premise will collapse, since the US and UK have undermined energy and food markets, for profiteering, and support State of Israel, when JEWS ARE FROM ETHIOPIA, Isaiah 20:5, of a British Zionist royal scam, an 1882 Zionist invasion of Palestine, the year after Disraeli's death, the same year, between the Boer Wars, to incite WWI and WWII, and we are headed for WWIII, over apartheid Schlemiel State ISRAEL. Learn to listen to the Rastafarians, finally, OK? Blah, blah Haille Sallassie, BUT IT IS ALL TRUE! Jews are from Ethiopia. And there is a reactor, up the Thames, SO LEARN TO DO WITHOUT SOMETHING, and something else to lose may be the Olympics, after 2012. When you deregulate energy and ethics, for the same war-pigs who let the CIA start WWII and a half, since 1948, things like the Olympic Games are not certain, in the long run!

FLETCH =) says:

i think we dont NEED the olympics but i is allways good to see austrailn people have a go. most ppl like to watch it. it is allways good to watch all the sports that wew never know of but then a gen some ppl hate it coz it takes over all the tv shows.thanks 4 reading and that is my say
we do in som e cases and iun other cases we dont need it =)

Asa says:

it's needed by the world. i think

adam says:

the olympics are entertaining and gives a feeling of great achievement to all the competing athletes. It also inspires the younger generation to set goals in order to achieve greatness, just like all the past olympic champions

Chonto says:

Olympics are the celebration of human achievement. You can't abolish the olympics. Think of all the HGH and Steroid sellers!

fefe says:

No way! It is too important for many sports!

surfchicky23 says:

The olympics is the biggest show on earth! Your mad!

Alex says:

Heck no! Olympics with all the crapola are better than no Olympics at all.

Arizona-Snow says:

I enjoy watching the Olympics it brings all the countries together in one giant entertainment fest. While some of the athletes may cheat by being on steriods does not mean they should spoil it for all of us. As you have seen lately nearly all professional sports are rife with steriod use but it don't mean the sports should be cancelled because of them. Eventually the cheaters are found out and are dealt with.

As for terrorists, should we let them dictate to us their ideologies? The Games brings the world together in one giant competition and it is about the only thing that does bring the world together. We like to think that the competing countries will put aside their differences for this one event. But whether the games exist or not there will still be strife in the world - abolishing the Olympics will not change this and maybe, just maybe the world is a better place because of the Olympics.

Controversial Olympic Games

Inside the Olympics: A Behind-the-Scenes Look at the Politics, the Scandals, and the Glory of the Games

Every two years, world attention turns to the Olympic Games for a few short weeks, in a celebration of athletic excellence, competition, and national pride. But in recent years, the Olympic ideal has also been tainted by scandals, greed, and corruption-from bribery, to doping, cheating, politics, and exploitation.

Never shy of the issues, Dick Pound reveals the full inside story-both good and bad-of the Games. An Olympian himself, and long-time IOC insider, Pound sheds a bright light on many controversial events and issues surrounding the Olympics, including the conduct of IOC officials, and the doping scandals that he considers the greatest threat to sports today. He also offers a fascinating look at negotiations in the high-stake worlds of television rights and corporate sponsorships, and at the politics, backstabbing, and intrigues that take place behind the scenes in the world of international sports.

Dishonored Games: Corruption, Money, and Greed at the Olympics

THE MYTH: The Olympic Games are the greatest festival of sport; they belong to the people of the world and are a magnificent demonstration of decency, fair play and openness.

THE TRUTH: The Olympics are now the plaything of the world's top twelve multinational companies, who pay hundreds of millions of dollars in sponsorship money. Doping is still rampant. Sports leaders promise to crack down but do little.

THE CLUB: The Games are controlled by a self-perpetuating oligarchy who travel the world like kings, most taking lavish gifts from cities desperate to cash in on the huge profits the Olympics now generate. In 1990 we saw the humiliating resignation of a leading member of "The Club". He had been caught taking "consultation fees" from business.

THE LEADER: The authors reveal that the ruler of the Olympic movement and world sport is a man who spent nearly forty years of his life as a fascist politician serving one of Europe's longest-lived dictatorships.
